    Abstract: PURPOSE: An address generating apparatus and method used for multi-channel interleaver/deinterleaver are provided which mitigates complexity of hardware, generates addresses for interleaving operation using one module without increasing complexity of hardware. CONSTITUTION: An address generator generates an address for reading data stored in an interleaver memory, being in B columns and F rows. Here, F is not equal to 2k (k is a positive number). The address generator includes a column counter(330), a row counter(350), a mapping device(360), and an adder(320). The column counter responds to B clock pulses, outputs 0 as the first column address, outputs a value obtain by adding an offset value F to previously outputted column address value (B-1) times, and generates a carry signal when the B clock pulses are completed. The row counter increases a count value one by one in response to the carry signal. The mapping device replaces the output of the row counter according to a predetermined row replacement rule. The adder generates the address using the output of the column counter as MSB and using the output of the mapping device as LSB.
