Abstract: A backlight unit and an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) comprising the same are provided to facilitate the compensation of brightness without increase of power consumption and manufacturing cost, by adding a white LED(Light Emitting Diode) to red, green, and blue LEDs and driving the LEDs in a local dimming type. A backlight unit comprises an LED block and an optical sheet disposed on the LED block. The LED block includes a substrate(302) and LEDs(350) mounted on the substrate. The LED includes a first LED group having red, green, and blue LEDs(310,320,330) and a second LED group having a white LED(340). The white LED is used for brightness compensation while the red, green, and blue LEDs make white display in combination. The backlight unit is driven in a local dimming type in which the red, green, blue, and white LEDs are individually driven such that the brightness of the red, green, blue, and white LEDs are different from one another.
