Abstract: A method for discriminating an optical information storage medium and an apparatus thereof are provided to process RFDC(Radio Frequency Direct Current) signal generated when moving up and down an objective lens, using a BPF(Band Pass Filter), so as to discriminate the number of data layers accurately. A data layer discriminating part(250) comprises first and second slice processors(252,256), a BPF(Band Pass Filter,254), a detection logic part(258), and a data layer counter(259). When RFDC(Radio Frequency Direct Current) signal is inputted to the first slice processor, the first slice processor compares the RFDC signal with a first slice level. When BPF output signal is inputted in the second slice processor, the second slice processor compares the BPF output signal with a second slice level.

Abstract: A method and an apparatus for discriminating optical information storage media are provided to measure an RFDC(Radio Frequency Direct Current) signal generated when moving an objective lens vertically to a multilayered optical disk in order to distinguish the number and thickness of the data layers accurately and increase compatibility between the optical information storage mediums. A method for discriminating optical information storage media comprises the steps of: moving an objective lens vertically at a predetermined speed with an optical information storage medium loaded(S40); generating a summation signal of the sizes of lights collected from a four-division optical detector; measuring a first period in which the summation signal has a higher value than the first level; and detecting the thickness of a data layer of the optical information storage medium from the first period. When the first period is greater than a first reference value and smaller than a second reference value(S70), the media is distinguished as a single layered optical information storage medium(S80). When the first period is greater than the third reference value and smaller than a fourth reference value(S90), the media is distinguished as a double layered optical information storage medium(S100). When the first period is greater than a fifth reference value and smaller than a sixth reference value(S110), the media is distinguished as a multilayered optical information storage medium(S120).

Abstract: An apparatus for controlling the power of an LD(Laser Diode) and a method therefor are provided to uniformly maintain an LD power output according to a temperature change within a quick time by composing a sample and hold unit and compensating a desired power level in the sampling of an RF(Radio Frequency). A sample and hold unit(42) samples an RF signal outputted when data are recorded, and extracts a power level of an LD.
