Abstract:
A polymerizable compound represented by the following general formula (1). It can provide a composition which is polymerizable at around room temperature and shows a liquid-crystal phase at low temperatures. The composition and a (co)polymer of the polymerizable compound are a liquid-crystal substance useful as an optically anisotropic object. (In the formula, rings A1 to A3 each represents a benzene ring, cyclohexane ring, etc.; X to Z each represents C1-8 alkyl or alkoxy, C2-6 alkenyl, halogeno, cyano, or CH2=CR3-COO-; R1 to R3 each represents hydrogen, methyl, or halogeno; L1 to L3 each represents -CH2CH2COO-, -COO-, -OCO-, -CH2CH2-, -O(CH2)f- (wherein f is 1 to 8), etc.; n is 0 or 1; and a to c are such numbers that the polymerizable compound has one or more substituents which are at least any one of X, Y, and Z.)
Abstract:
Disclosed is a liquid crystal composition characterized by containing 15% by mass or more of a compound having a terminal structure represented by the general formula (I) below. This liquid crystal composition has high dielectric constant anisotropy ( ϵ) and low rotational viscosity (Ϝ1), and is thus suitably used as a liquid crystal composition for IPS liquid crystal displays or low voltage-driven TN liquid crystal displays. (I) (In the above formula, Q represents a saturated or unsaturated alkyl group having 1-8 carbon atoms which may be substituted by a halogen atom.)
