    Abstract: An apparatus (510) and method for inflating a vehicular inflatable device are provided wherein inflation gas is produced via a decomposing material in a first chamber (560). Decomposition is initiated by an initiator (582). The apparatus may include a second chamber (514), which preferably stores a compressed inert gas and into which inflation gas from the first chamber may pass. A chamber opening device (545b) may be provided to rupture a seal (550) to release the contents of the second chamber independently of the initiation of decomposition in the first chamber. This opening device can also act as an initiator for the decomposition of gas-generating material in the second chamber. Preferred sources of decomposition gas are N 2 O, acetylene and acetylene-based materials.

    Abstract: An apparatus (10) for inflating a vehicular inflatable device incorporates a porous piston (16) that is used to compress a stored pressurised oxidant or oxidant and inert gas mixture (24), while simultaneously introducing a hot, atomised liquid fuel into the gas mixture. The liquid fuel (18) stored in the piston is completely isolated from the oxidant gas, eliminating long-term storage concerns. The combination of elevated pressure and temperature in the stored gas chamber results in immediate and complete combustion of the liquid fuel, accompanied by a dramatic increase in stored gas pressure. A rupture disc (46) and diffuser arrangement (26, 48) is used to control the flow of gases from the stored chamber into the vehicular inflatable device. The apparatus incorporates common fuels and oxidants, and does not produce any particulate matter. By proper selection of the various parameters related to the piston structure and the properties of the stored gas, the performance of the apparatus can be tailored to meet specific requirements. Potentially, the gas mixture may be stored at relatively low pressures.

    Abstract: The inflator comprises an initiator, a fuel chamber containing a liquid fuel, and a housing containing a combustion chamber. An oxidant in the combustion chamber and at least one discharge port are provided. The inflator is arranged so that activation of the initiator initiates the burning of the liquid fuel and oxidant in the combustion chamber producing gases which exit the inflator through the discharge port. The liquid fuel is stored in a porous solid structure within the fuel chamber. The porous solid structure is fabricated from a porous material which is also frangible and is positioned between the initiator and the combustion chamber whereby the combustion products produced by the firing of the initiator are directed at the frangible porous structure causing it to disintegrate and release its fuel into the combustion chamber.
