    Abstract: An earth-boring bit has a mechanical face seal assembly with PCD faces. The bit has a bearing shaft with a cone rotatably mounted on the bearing shaft. The seal locates between the bearing shaft and the cone for sealing lubricant therein. The seal includes at least one rigid seal ring having a cemented carbide body and an annular PCD face located on it. The mating face may also be of a PCD material. The cemented carbide body contains a binder that migrates into the PCD face while the PCD face is being formed. A binder-free region is leached on the surface of the PCD face.

A seal assembly is disposed between the cylindrical journal bearing surface and the cutter proximally to the base of the cantilevered bearing shaft. The seal assembly includes at least one rigid seal ring having a seal face in contact with a second seal face. A selected one of the seal faces is at least partially formed of a hard ceramic type material with the other seal face being formed of a relatively softer material to provide improved wear resistance for the seal assembly.

    Abstract: An earth boring bit has sliding engaging surfaces between a cone assembly and a bearing pin. Micropores are formed in at least one of the engaging surfaces. Each of the micropores has a leading portion and a trailing portion. The leading portion is at a more gradual slope than the trailing portion. The micropores are located in a pattern of a greater density in a region of the engaging surfaces that operate at higher pressures than in other regions.
