    Abstract: An earth-boring bit has a mechanical face seal assembly with PCD faces. The bit has a bearing shaft 15 with a cone 16 rotatably mounted on the bearing shaft. The seal locates between the bearing shaft and the cone for sealing lubricant therein. The seal includes at least one rigid seal ring 21 having a carbide body and an annular PCD face 33 located on it. The mating face 35 may also be of a PCD material, and as shown is formed by an annular insert 23 which has a metal carbide body 36. An energizing elastomer forces the faces together and, elastomer 31 prevents the ingress of debris. Various configurations of the faces 33, 35 are disclosed, as is a method of forming the faces.

    Abstract: An earth boring bit has a bit body (13) with at least one bearing pin (15). A cone (16) is rotatably mounted on the bearing pin (15). A seal assembly (19) is located between the cone (16) and the bearing pin (15), the seal assembly (19) having at least one flexible seal member (25,31). A flexible pressure compensating diaphragm (17) is mounted in the body (13). The diaphragm (17) has one side adapted to be exposed to borehole fluids and another side in contact with lubricant contained in bearing spaces between the cone (16) and the bearing pin (15). The flexible seal member (25,31) and the diaphragm (17) are, formed of a fluprinated elastomer. The elastomer is either a perf luoroelastomer (FFKM) or a f luoroelastomer (FKM).

    Abstract: A subterranean drill tool has a seal gland formed between a rotating and a static surface. An annular elastomeric seal is located in the gland in engagement with each of the surfaces. A property gradient is formed in at least part of the elastomeric material. The property gradient defines a property that changes from a first level at the surface to a second level in the interior of the seal. The elastomeric material within the property gradient has the same chemical composition as the rest of the seal.

    Abstract: An earth-boring bit has a bit body and at least one bearing shaft depending inwardly and downwardly from the bit body. The bearing shaft has a base where it joins the bit body. At least one cutter is mounted for rotation on the bearing shaft and has radial and axial surfaces that cooperate with the base of the bearing shaft to define a bearing seal gland. A bearing is defined between the cutter and bearing shaft. A seal element is disposed in the seal gland. A secondary seal is disposed in the seal gland opposite the cutter axial surface and cooperates with the seal element to at least partially seal the gland against entry of debris from the exterior of the bit.

    Abstract: An earth-boring bit having a bit body 12 and bearing shaft 19 comprises a cylindrical journal bearing surface 21 and a cutter 36 locked to the bearing shaft by balls 35 in a bearing channel. A transverse hole 46 is located on the non-loaded side of an axis of the bearing shaft. The hole intersects with a ball plug hole 37 and with the journal bearing surface at a trailing side and a leading side and communicates with both leading and trailing side ports (47 and 49, figure 4). Journal flats on the bearing shaft communicate with the trailing side port and the leading side port. The leading side journal flat is a different size than the trailing side journal flat to enhance circulation of a lubricant from a source 17 via passages 41, 37, and 46, to the journal bearing surface.
