Abstract: Plaster of Paris and cement are coloured red with a pigment of the formula ALSO:In examples, a pigment of the formula (2) wherein X is NH and rings A and D are each linearly fused with benzene rings, is ground with nitrocellulose, dibutyl phthalate and an ethyl alcohol/ethyl glycol mixture to give a yellow printing colour; (3) wherein X is 0, is mixed with a lacquer containing nitrocellulose, dibutylphthalate, benzyl butyl phthalate, the product obtained by treating cyclohexanone with sodium hydroxide, butyl acetate, methyl acetate, and toluene to give a greenish-yellow lacquer, (pigments wherein X is NH, ring D forms part of a phenazine residue and ring A may or may not be linearly fused to a benzene ring may also be used); (4) wherein X is NH, ring D forms part of a phenazine residue and ring A is linearly fused to a benzene ring, is ground with xylene and a mixture of linseed oil and the esterification product from phthalic acid, glycerin and pentaerythritol to give a red-orange lacquer; (5) wherein X is NH and ring D is linearly fused to a benzene ring, is ground with an unsaturated polyester resin drying without the aid of paraffin and then mixed with monostyrene, a cyclohexanone peroxide paste in dibutyl phthalate, cobalt naphthenate in white spirit and silicone oil in xylene to give a yellow paint for wood; (6) wherein X is 0 and ring D forms part of an anthraquinone residue, is mixed with polyvinyl chloride, di-isooctyl phthalate and titanium dioxide to give a red polyvinyl chloride; and (7) wherein X is NH, is mixed and homogenised with polystyrene granulate or polyethylene to give a yellow plastic.ALSO:Quinoxaline derivatives of the formula wherein X is NH, O or S and which may carry substituents and/or other rings fused linearly or angularly are made by heating a 2 : 3-dichlorquinoxaline at a temperature above about 125 DEG C. with an appropriate o-diamino-, o-amino-hydroxy- or o-amino-mercapto-aromatic or heterocyclic compound at a mol. ratio of about 1 : 1 using a carboxylic acid-N : N-dialkylamide as a solvent. The invention also comprises pigments of the above formula wherein X is NH, O or S and which may be substituted and/or have linearly fused rings, having a mean particle size in the range of from 0.02 to 1 micron. The pigments may be made by the process above and then if necessray be subjected to salt-milling or acid-pasting. When additional fused rings are present these may be such that ring A in the formula above also forms part of a naphthalene nucleus and/or ring D also forms part of naphthalene, anthracene, anthraquinone or phenazine nuclei. The pigments colour a variety of materials. In examples (1) a yellow printing ink is made by grinding aluminium hydroxide and a linseed oil varnish with one of a number of pigments of the above general formula, and a yellow wall-paper colour is made by mixing a paste of a pigment of the above general formula where a benzene ring is linearly fused to ring D with heavy spar, aluminium sulphate, sodium carbonate and water, adding barium chloride and mixing the precipitate obtained with glue solution.

Abstract: In an example (12) a linear quinacridone having a mean primary particle size of more than 0.1 micron and a specific surface of less than about 30 square metres per gram is ground with plaster to give a red plaster. Cement may be similarly coloured and a red concrete made.ALSO:In examples a red pigment consisting of a linear quinacridone exhibiting in its X-ray diffraction pattern three strong lines, at a double glancing angle of 6.5 degrees, 13.7 degrees and 26.4 degrees, three medium lines at 13.1 degrees, 13.3 degrees and 23.8 degrees and three weak lines at 17.0 degrees, 20.5 degrees and 25.0 degrees and having a mean primary particle size of more than 0.1 micron and a specific surface of less than about 30 square metres per gram is incorporated into (2) nitrocellulose, dibutyl phthalate, ethyl alcohol and ethyl glycol; (3) linseed oil, xylene and the esterification product of phthalic acid and a mixture of glycerin and pentaerythritol; (4) nitrocellulose, dibutyl phthalate, benzyl butyl phthalate, the product obtained by treating cyclohexanone with sodium hydroxide, butyl acetate, methyl acetate and toluene; (5) coconut oil alkyd resin, xylene and n-butanol; (6) a drying unsaturated polyester resin, and monostyrene and a cyclohexanone peroxide paste and then cobalt naphthenate in white spirit and silicone oil solution are added; (7) polyvinyl chloride, di-isooctyl phthalate and titanium dioxide (rutile); (8) polystyrene, polyethylene or polycaprolactam; (9) a mixture of pale crepe rubber, sulphur, stearic acid, 2-mercaptobenzthiazole, hexamethylene tetramine, zinc oxide, chalk and titanium dioxide (anatase) and vulcanisation is effected; (10) titanium dioxide (rutile), lithopone, talc and a solution of sodium hexametaphosphate and a condensation product from sodium naphthalene-2-sulphonate and formaldehyde, and the paste thus obtained is mixed into a polyvinyl acetate dispersion or into a commercial self-vulcanising rubber latex.ALSO:The invention comprises a modification of linear quinacridone (7 : 14-dioxo-5 :7 : 12 : 14-tetrahydroquinolino -(2 : 3-6) - acridine) which exhibits in the X-ray diffraction pattern three strong lines at a double glancing angle of 6.5 degrees, 13.7 degrees and 26.4 degrees, three medium lines at 13.1 degrees, 13.3 degrees and 38.8 degrees and three weak lines at 17.0 degrees, 20.5 degrees and 25.0 degrees, in a mean primary particle size of more than 0.1 micron and with a specific surface of less than about 30 square metres per gram. The modification is made by contacting 7 : 14-dioxo- 5 : 7 : 12 : 14 - tetrahydroquinolino - (2: 3-6)-acridine in a mean primary particle size of less than 5 microns length with N-methylpyrrolidone until the above X-ray diffraction pattern has been obtained. The pigment, prepared by grinding or acid-pasting, may be stirred or boiled with the N-methylpyrrolidone, or ground with a water-soluble inorganic salt, an alkali and the N-methylpyrrolidone. Examples are given. In further examples, (1) a printing ink is made by grinding the above linear quinacridone with aluminium hydroxide and a linseed oil varnish; and (II) a wallpaper colour is made by suspending heavy spar in aqueous aluminium sulphate, adding sodium carbonate and an aqueous paste of the above linear quinacridone and then aqueous barium chloride and mixing the resulting precipitate with an aqueous glue solution. Specifications 808,052 and 868,360 are referred to.ALSO:In an Example (13) on red dyed paper is made by mixing an aqueous paste of a linear quinacridone exhibiting in its X-ray diffraction pattern three strong lines at a double glancing angle of 6.5 degrees, 13.7 degrees and 26.4 degrees, three medium lines at 13.1 degrees, 13.3 degrees and 23.8 degrees and three weak lines at 17.0 degrees, 20.5 degrees and 25.0 degrees and having a mean primary particle size of more than 0.1 micron and a specific surface of less than about 30 square metres per gram with bleached sulphite cellulose, grinding the mixture with wood glue and aluminium oxysulphate and working up in a paper machine.

Abstract: In an example, (9), a red wallpaper colour is made by mixing with a 20% glue solution an aqueous paste containing the precipitate obtained by adding barium chloride solution to a suspension made by suspending heavy spar in aluminium sulphate solution and adding aqueous sodium carbonate and an aqueous paste of the gammamodification of 2:9-dichloroquinacridone.ALSO:Nitrocellulose printing colours, nitrocellulose lacquers, cellulose xanthate spinning compositions, phenoplasts, aminoplasts, polyesters, polyurethanes, polycaprolactams, polyethylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride and polyvinyl acetate are coloured by a pigment which is stated to be the gamma modification of 2:9-dichloroquinacridone. In examples the pigment is mixed with (2) nitrocellulose, dibutyl phthalate, ethyl alcohol and ethyl glycol to give a printing colour, or (3) ester-soluble nitrocellulose, dibutyl phthalate, the synthetic resin obtained by treating cyclohexanone with sodium hydroxide, butyl acetate, methyl acetate and toluene to give a lacquer, and an aqueous paste of the pigment with a sodium 2-naphthalene sulphonate/formaldehyde condensation product is used to colour (8) spinnable alkali cellulose xanthate and (11) dissolved cellulose xanthate containing 8% of a -cellulose. In further examples the pigment is incorporated in (4) a baking lacquer of coconut oil alkyd resin, urea-formaldehyde resin, xylene and butanol, (5) polyvinyl chloride di-isooctyl-phthalate and titanium dioxide and (6) polystyrene, polyethylene or polycaprolactam.ALSO:The invention comprises a pigment which is a modification of 2:9-dichlorquinacridone referred to as the gamma-modification and characterized by an X-ray diffraction pattern having a line of great intensity at a goniometer angle of 27,8 degrees, four lines of medium intensity at 5,4 degrees, 15,3 degrees, 23,0 degrees and 23,4 degrees, and eight lines of low intensity at 16,6 degrees, 19,3 degrees, 21,3 degrees, 24,5 degrees, 25,3 degrees, 26,7 degrees, 29,0 degrees and 30,7 degrees and pigmented systems containing this pigment. When the pigment has an average primary particle size of less than 0,1 micron the X-ray pattern shows an inflection instead of a line at 23,4 degrees. The gamma modification is made by ring-closing 2:5-bis(p-chlorophenyl)- terephthalic acid or an ester thereof in 60-75% sulphuric acid at 140-180 DEG C., by grinding or milling any other modification of 2:9-dichloroquinacridone or by contacting any other modification in finely-divided form with organic solvents such as aliphatic and aromatic mono- and diamines, carboxylic acid amides and their N-alkyl and N-aryl derivatives, sulphonic acid amides, heterocyclic compounds such as imidazole, piperidone, pyrrolidone and its N-alkyl derivatives and quinoline and solvents containing alkali. A large number of solvents are mentioned. Milling to convert the gamma modification into a finely-divided form or to convert other modifications into the gamma modification may be conducted in the dry state in the presence of salts, in water, in acids such as 65-75% sulphuric acid, caustic alkalis such as caustic soda or caustic potash solution, or organic solvents such as aromatic hydrocarbons, halo-hydrocarbons, alcohols, glycols, ethers, carboxylic acid amides, carboxylic acid esters and lactams especially dimethylformamide or N-methylpyrrolidone. A number of solvents are specified. It is stated that the alphamodification of 2:9-dichloroquinacridone is made by ring-closing 2:5-bis-(p-chlorophenyl) terephthalic acid in ten times the amount of 85% sulphuric acid at 150 DEG C., the beta-modification is made by oxidising 2:9-dichlorodihydroquinacridone or by ring-closing 2:5-bis-(p-chlorophenyl)-terephthalic acid with polyphosphoric acid and an unclassified modification is made by precipitating 2:9-dichloroquinacridone from a 5% solution in sulphuric acid by addition of water. Examples are given.ALSO:In an Example (10), a red cement is made by mixing 100 parts of cement, 400 parts of sand, 40 parts of water and 33 parts of an aqueous paste containing a sodium 2-naphthalene sulphonate/formaldehyde condensation product and as pigment the gamma modification of 2 : 9-dichloroquinacridone.
