Abstract: In this process for preparing an aqueous polymer dispersion, an aqueous dispersion of a polymer that contains at least one chemically bound monomer having at least one ethylenically unsaturated group is prepared in a manner known per se, so that the total content of free, i.e. non chemically bound, monomers that contain at least one ethylenically unsaturated double bond, in the thus prepared aqueous polymer dispersion, lies in a range from > 0 to 1 % by weight, with respect to the polymer content of the aqueous polymer dispersion. This residual monomer content is then reduced by means of a radical redox initiator system that includes at least one oxidising agent and at least one reducing agent. The redox initiator system contains as reducing agent a mercaptane with at least one other functional group besides the mercaptane group.
