Abstract: A catalyst system comprises Ni(0) and phosphorous ligands. Independent claims are included for: (i) a process for the production of the system (I) by reaction of Ni(O) with a compound (B) in the presence of a liquid diluent; reaction of the resulting product with a compound (C) in the presence of a liquid diluent to yield the system (I); (ii) a process for the production of 5C-monoolefinic mononitrile having nonconjugated C=C and C=N bonds by hydrogenation of a 1,3-butadiene containing hydrocarbon mixture in the presence of a catalyst whereby the hydrocyanation is carried out in the presence of the catalyst system (I).
