Abstract: In the direct printing of textiles with pastes containing a vat or sulphur dyestuff, or in the discharge printing of textiles predyed with a dischargeable dyestuff, the paste employed contains, as the reducing agent, an amine containing at least once, directly attached to the nitrogen atom, the radical of an alkali metal or ammonium salt of methanesulphinic acid. The paste may contain the usual thickeners, such as alginates, starch, starch ethers, cellulose ethers, tragacanth, British gum and crystal gum, the usual printing auxiliaries, such as glycerine, urea, glycols, triethanolamine and the sodium salt of 4-benzyl-aminobenzene 1-sulphonic acid, and the usual discharge auxiliaries, such as anthraquinone and the betaine compound of the calcium salt of dimethyl-m-sulphophenyl-p-sulphobenzyl-ammonium hydroxide. Numerous examples are given. Specification 837,940 is referred to.

Abstract: In a two-stage printing process for textile materials wherein the material is printed with a vat or sulphur dyestuff in the first stage and in the second stage is treated with a solution of a reducing agent and then given a short heattreatment, the reducing agent employed is a compound of the formula wherein A represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl radical, x = 0, 1 or 2, y = 1, 2 or 3, x + y = 3 and D represents the radical of a salt of an alkylsulphinic acid with 2 to 4 carbon atoms of the formula wherein E represents an alkyl radical, G represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical and Z is an alkali metal or ammonium cation. The lower alkyl radical A may bear a substituent radical of the formula wherein D has the above significance, p and q are 0, 1 or 2 and p + q = 2. The printing paste may contain coagulable thickening-agents such as alkyl cellulose ethers, carob bean flour ether, polyvinyl alcohol, ethers of gum Guar, alginates or carob bean flour, and the printing paste or reducing agent solution may contain alkaline agents such as sodium or potassium hydroxide or carbonate. The reducing agent solution may be sprayed on to the printed textile, in which case the printing paste may contain noncoagulable thickening agents such as tragacanth mucilage. The heat treatment is preferably effected at 80-200 DEG C. for 10-60 seconds by air-free steam, contact with heated metal, or immersion in hot oil or molten metal baths or in hot aqueous salt solutions. The reducing agent solution may also contain vat dyestuffs. The process is applicable to textiles of native or regenerated cellulose, natural silk or polyamide fibres. Numerous examples are given in which the reducing agents enployed are in which Z+=a sodium or potassium cation and E = methyl-, ethyl- or n-propyl. in which Z+=a potassium cation. in which Z+=a sodium or potassium ion and E = methyl. in which Z+=a sodium, potassium or ammonium cation. in which Z+=a potassium cation.
