Abstract: In a two-stage printing process for textile materials wherein the material is printed with a vat or sulphur dyestuff in the first stage and in the second stage is treated with a solution of a reducing agent and then given a short heattreatment, the reducing agent employed is a compound of the formula wherein A represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl radical, x = 0, 1 or 2, y = 1, 2 or 3, x + y = 3 and D represents the radical of a salt of an alkylsulphinic acid with 2 to 4 carbon atoms of the formula wherein E represents an alkyl radical, G represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical and Z is an alkali metal or ammonium cation. The lower alkyl radical A may bear a substituent radical of the formula wherein D has the above significance, p and q are 0, 1 or 2 and p + q = 2. The printing paste may contain coagulable thickening-agents such as alkyl cellulose ethers, carob bean flour ether, polyvinyl alcohol, ethers of gum Guar, alginates or carob bean flour, and the printing paste or reducing agent solution may contain alkaline agents such as sodium or potassium hydroxide or carbonate. The reducing agent solution may be sprayed on to the printed textile, in which case the printing paste may contain noncoagulable thickening agents such as tragacanth mucilage. The heat treatment is preferably effected at 80-200 DEG C. for 10-60 seconds by air-free steam, contact with heated metal, or immersion in hot oil or molten metal baths or in hot aqueous salt solutions. The reducing agent solution may also contain vat dyestuffs. The process is applicable to textiles of native or regenerated cellulose, natural silk or polyamide fibres. Numerous examples are given in which the reducing agents enployed are in which Z+=a sodium or potassium cation and E = methyl-, ethyl- or n-propyl. in which Z+=a potassium cation. in which Z+=a sodium or potassium ion and E = methyl. in which Z+=a sodium, potassium or ammonium cation. in which Z+=a potassium cation.

Abstract: In the dyeing of textile yarns with vat or sulphur dyestuffs on skein yarn or spray dyeing machines, improved results are obtained by employing as the reducing agent (a) an alkali-metal or ammonium salt of a linear or branched hydroxyalkyl sulphinic acid with 2-4 carbon atoms in which the hydroxyl group and the sulphinic acid group are attached to the same carbon atom or (b) a derivative of ammonia which contains at least once, directly attached to the nitrogen atom, the radical of an alkali-metal or ammonium salt of a linear or branched alkylsulphinic acid with 2-4 carbon atoms in which the nitrogen atom and the sulphur atom are attached to the same carbon atom, or a mixture of the two salts. Specified derivatives of ammonia are the reaction products of the alkali-metal or ammonium salts of a hydroxyalkyl sulphinic acid with 2-4 carbon atoms with methylamine, dimethylamine, isopropylamine, nbutylamine, ethylene diamine, hydrazine or urea. Examples describe the dyeing of yarns of cotton, mercerised cotton and regenerated cellulose staple fibres.

Abstract: In the printing of textile materials with vat or sulphur dyestuffs by a two-stage process wherein the textile is printed with the dyestuff in the first stage and then, in the second stage, is treated with a solution of a reducing agent and finally heat-treated, the reducing agent employed is an alkali-metal or ammonium salt of a straight- or branched-chain-hydroxyalkyl p sulphinic acid with 2 to 4 carbon atoms. Specified reducing agents are the alkali-metal and ammonium salts of hydroxyethane-, hydroxy-n-propane-, hydroxy-iso-propane- and hydroxy-n-butane-sulphinic acids. The printing paste may contain coagulable thickening agents, such as cellulose ethers, polyvinyl alcohol, carob bean flour, carob bean flour ether, ethers of gum Guar or alginates, and alkaline agents, such as sodium or potassium hydroxides or carbonates, may be added to the printing paste or to the reducing agent solution which is padded or printed on the textile. Alternatively, the printing paste may contain non-coagulable thickening agents, such as tragacanth mucilage, alkaline agents being then added to either the printing paste or the reducing agent solution, in which case the reducing agent solution may be sprayed on to the textile. The heat treatment may be effected at 80-200 DEG C. for 10 to 60 seconds by treatment with steam, or in molten metal, hot oil or hot aqueous salt baths, or by contact with a heated metal surface, air being excluded in all cases. The process is applicable to textiles of native or regenerated cellulose, natural silk or polyamide fibres. Numerous examples are given, in one of which the reducing agent padding solution also contains a vat dyestuff.
