    Abstract: Vat and/or sulphur dyes are reduced with a mixture of sodium dithionite with (a) a derivative of ammonia containing at least once, attached via nitrogen, the radical of an alkali metal or ammonium salt of an alkylsulphinic acid having 1-4 C atoms and/or with (b) an alkali metal or ammonium salt of a hydroxyalkylsulphinic acid having 2-4 C atoms. Compounds (a) may have the formula I wherein x is an integer 0-2, y is an integer 1-3, x and y being 3, A is H, low alkyl or low alkyl substituted by a radical of Formula III below and D is a radical of 1-4 C atoms of the formula II wherein each R is H or alkyl and Z is an ammonium or alkali metal cation, the radical designated by A having the formula III wherein p and q are integers 0-2 and p + q is 2. Textile materials, e.g. of cotton, may be bleached using the present reductive mixtures (see Example 8). The dyebaths or bleaching solutions may also contain ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, nitrilotriacetic acid or alkali metal salts thereof. Examples of dyeing cotton and viscose fabrics are given.
