Abstract: In a process for the preparation of homo or copolymers of at least one polymerisable monomer consisting of styrene, butadiene, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, alkyl(meth)acrylate, meth(acrylic)acid, (meth)acrylonitrile or (meth)acrylamide by an emulsion polymerisation technique, reaction is carried out at at least 40 degrees C in the presence of a dispersing agent and a radical initiator such that at least 85 wt.% of the polymer is prepared by (a) mixing water, inert solvent and optionally dispersing agent and optionally a portion of the monomer, (b) adding initiator and (c) adding the rest of the monomer, optionally in the form of an emulsion with further water and optionally further dispersing agent or processing aids. Steps (a) and (b) or (b) and (c) may be carried out together at 40-120 degrees C and the resulting dispersion from each step or all the steps is recirculated around a flow loop external to the reaction vessel containing a low shear pump and a heat exchanger exhibiting a laminar flow profile. An apparatus for carrying out the reaction is also claimed and comprises means for storing and feeding reactants and processing aids, a reactor vessel with a heating/cooling mantle and means for draining, an external flow loop with a low shear pump and heat exchanger exhibiting a laminar flow profile and necessary connecting pipes.

Abstract: The invention relates to a device for transporting polymer dispersions. Said device can be driven by a drive system and is configured in the form of an impeller (28). Said impeller can be surrounded by a housing or project freely into the polymer dispersion contained in a reactor vessel. A number of blades (2) are arranged in the area of the hub (1) of the impeller (28) in such a way that the polymer dispersion flows evenly through the pump chambers (5, 25) on the front side (7) and the rear side (8) of the impeller (28).

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the continuous production of a polymer dispersion by means of an aqueous radical emulsion polymerization of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer in a reactor. According to the invention, an emulsion of the monomer or of the monomers in an aqueous phase is fed into the reactor, and the average droplet size of the monomer drops which are emulsified in an aqueous phase ranges from 1 to 20 mu m according to the polymerization conditions. The method results in a polymer dispersion having a low coagulate content.

Abstract: A microsuspension polymer (A') having an average particle diameter of 0.08-100 microns comprises (A11) 0.05-20 wt.% of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer having free acidic groups (A12) 80-99.95 wt.% of copolymerizable monomers, whose homopolymer is free of basic groups and (A13) 0-10 wt.% crosslinking monomers. Independent claims are included for: (1) a graft polymer micro-suspension (A) comprising (A1) 20-99.95 wt.% of a graft core having an average particle diameter of 0.08-100 microns and (A2) 0.05-80 wt.% of a graft sheath whereby both (A1) and (A2) are free of basic groups and (A1) and/or (A2) is formed at least partially of ethylenically unsaturated monomers having free acidic groups. (2) a process for the production of (A') or (A) by dispersion of (A') or the corresponding monomers of (A1) in water in the presence of a protective colloid to form a dispersion having an average particle diameter of 0.08-100 microns, polymerisation of the droplets with a radical polymerisation initiator to a conversion of greater than 50% and optionally graft polymerisation of the resulting mixture with monomers of (A2). (3) a molding composition comprising 1-85 wt.% graft polymer (A), 15-99 wt.% (B) - a polymer matrix consisting of polymers of styrene, alpha -methylstyrene, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile and/or (meth)acrylic acid ester, 0-50 wt.% (C) - fibrous and/or particulate fillers and 0-40 wt.% (D) - other additives; and (4) fibers, film or molded articles prepared from the molding composition.

Abstract: Production of an aqueous polymer dispersion involves moving the reaction emulsion through an external cycle (9) leading from and returning to a reaction vessel. The cycle (9) has a shearing-deficient pump and a heat exchanger (8) having a laminar flow profile. Production of an aqueous polymer dispersion comprises radically polymerizing compounds (I) having individual solubility in water of at least 0.001 wt.%, and comprising polymer particles containing compounds (II), whose water solubility is less than 0.001 wt.%. An oil-in -water mixture (emulsion I) is produced from a mixture of compound (I) including the compounds (II). An Independent claim is also included for the apparatus used to carry out production process.

Abstract: A particulate polymer P having an average particle diameter d50 of from 0.1 to 50 mum is prepared by a process in which an emulsion E is prepared fromone or more monomers M, which are polymerizable by free radical polymerization to give the polymer P,water, andat least one protective colloid PCby the action of high shear forces, and the emulsion E is subjected to polymerization in a reactor with the use of a free radical polymerization initiator RI wherein, based on the emulsion E, not more than 75% by weight of the emulsion E (initially taken portion of E) are initially taken in the reactor at the beginning of the polymerization and at least 25% by weight of the emulsion E (feed portion of E) are not fed to the reactor until after the beginning of the polymerization.
