Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an emulsion homopolymer and copolymer having excellent performances and characteristics by which the method can be practiced on an industrial scale in a short reactional time and application can be made to various monomers, and an apparatus used therefor. SOLUTION: This method for producing an emulsion homopolymer and copolymer is to carry out the (co)polymerization from a specific kind of monomer(s) so that the monomer(s) may occupy at least 85wt.% of the (co)polymer. The method comprises (a) a step for adding water or, as necessary, a dispersion assistant, a seed and a part of the monomer(s), (b) a step for adding an initiator, (c) a step for adding the residual total monomer(s) directly or in the form of an emulsion and further, as necessary, in the presence of another dispersion assistant or carrying out the steps (a) and (b) or the steps (b) and (c) as a single step, keeping the reactional mixture in a state of its dispersion and installing one or more low-shearing pumps and one or more essentially laminar flow type heat exchangers in any steps or each step, starting the reactional mixture from a reactor, making the reactional mixture flow through an external circuit returning to the reactor and polymerizing the reactional mixture at 40-120 deg.C temperature.

Abstract: In the process and a correspondingly appropriate device for preparing homo- or copolymers of at least one of the polymerizable monomers of the group consisting of styrene, butadiene, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, alkyl (meth)acrylate (meth)acrylic acid, (meth)acrylonitrile and (meth)acrylamide reaction is carried out at at least 40.degree.C in the presence of a dispensing auxillary and of a free-radical polymerization initiator such that at least 85 % by weight of the polymer is formed from these monomers. In the multistage process the procedure is such that a) in a first stage water is added as a solvent which is inert in the reaction, and dispensing auxiliaries, seed and a first portion of monomer(s) are added if desired, b) in a second stage initiator is added, and c) in a third stage the remainder or all of the monomer(s) is added directly or in emulsion form and in the presence of further water and, if desired, further dispersing auxiliary or other auxiliaries. it also being possible to operate any two of the stages as a single stage. The reaction mixture, which is in emulsion from, is moved in all or some stages through an external circuit which leads from and back to the reaction vessel (2) and comprises at least one low-shear pump (7) and at lest on heat exchanger (8) having an essentially laminar flow profile. The products prepared by this process, which involves short preparation times, have good performance properties (for adhesive bonds, for example).

Abstract: Se presenta un proceso y un dispositivo correspondientemente apropiado para preparar homopolímeros o bien copolímeros de al menos uno de los monomeros polímerizables del grupo que consiste de estíreno, butadieno, cloruro de vinilo , acetato de vinilo, cloruro de vinilideno, (met)acrilato de alquilo, ácido (met)acrilico, (met)acrilontrilo y (met)acrilamída, en donde la reaccion de lleva a cabo a una temperatura de al menos 40 degree C en precencia de un auxiliar de dispersion y de un iniciador de polímerizacion de radicales libres de tal manera que al menos el 85% en peso del polímero se forma de estos monomeros. En el proceso de etapas multiples el procedimiento es tal que: a) en una etapa se agrega agua como solvente que es inerte en la reaccion, y auxiliares de dispersion, semillas y una primera porcion de monomero(s) se agregan, si se desea, b) en una etapa, se agrega un iniciador, y c) en una tercera etapa se agrega el resto del o de los monomero(s) directamente o bien en forma de emulsion y en presencia de agua adicional y, si se desea, auxiliar de dispersion adicional o bien otros auxiliares, es también posible llevar a cabo cualquiera de dos atapas en forma de una etapa unica. La mezcla de la reaccion que se encuentra en forma de emulsion, es desplazada en todas las etapas o bien en ciertas etapas a través de un circuito externo que lleva a partir del recipiente de reaccion y de regreso hacia dicho recipiente de reaccion y que comprende al menos una bomba de bajo esfuerzo cortante y al menos un intercambiador de calor que tiene un perfil de flujo esencialmente laminar. Los productos preparados mediante este proceso, que incluye un intercambiador de calor que tiene un perfil de flujo esencialmente laminar. Los productos preparados mediante este proceso incluye unos períodos cortos de preparacion, tienen buenas propiedades de desempeño (para uniones adhesivas, por ejemplo).
