Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an emulsion homopolymer and copolymer having excellent performances and characteristics by which the method can be practiced on an industrial scale in a short reactional time and application can be made to various monomers, and an apparatus used therefor. SOLUTION: This method for producing an emulsion homopolymer and copolymer is to carry out the (co)polymerization from a specific kind of monomer(s) so that the monomer(s) may occupy at least 85wt.% of the (co)polymer. The method comprises (a) a step for adding water or, as necessary, a dispersion assistant, a seed and a part of the monomer(s), (b) a step for adding an initiator, (c) a step for adding the residual total monomer(s) directly or in the form of an emulsion and further, as necessary, in the presence of another dispersion assistant or carrying out the steps (a) and (b) or the steps (b) and (c) as a single step, keeping the reactional mixture in a state of its dispersion and installing one or more low-shearing pumps and one or more essentially laminar flow type heat exchangers in any steps or each step, starting the reactional mixture from a reactor, making the reactional mixture flow through an external circuit returning to the reactor and polymerizing the reactional mixture at 40-120 deg.C temperature.
Abstract:

Aq. dispersions (I) contain (A) a radically polymerised polymer contg. 5-50 wt.% ethylenically unsatd. acid monomer units (A1) and (B) an anionically polymerised polymer. Also claimed is a process for the prodn. of (I), by producing polymer (A) or (B) in organic solvent in the presence of (B) or (A), or producing (A) and (B) in soln. separately and mixing the solns. or dispersions obtd., then dispersing the mixt. in water and removing organic solvent as required. Also claimed are substrates coated with (I).

In a process for the preparation of homo or copolymers of at least one polymerisable monomer consisting of styrene, butadiene, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, alkyl(meth)acrylate, meth(acrylic)acid, (meth)acrylonitrile or (meth)acrylamide by an emulsion polymerisation technique, reaction is carried out at at least 40 degrees C in the presence of a dispersing agent and a radical initiator such that at least 85 wt.% of the polymer is prepared by (a) mixing water, inert solvent and optionally dispersing agent and optionally a portion of the monomer, (b) adding initiator and (c) adding the rest of the monomer, optionally in the form of an emulsion with further water and optionally further dispersing agent or processing aids. Steps (a) and (b) or (b) and (c) may be carried out together at 40-120 degrees C and the resulting dispersion from each step or all the steps is recirculated around a flow loop external to the reaction vessel containing a low shear pump and a heat exchanger exhibiting a laminar flow profile. An apparatus for carrying out the reaction is also claimed and comprises means for storing and feeding reactants and processing aids, a reactor vessel with a heating/cooling mantle and means for draining, an external flow loop with a low shear pump and heat exchanger exhibiting a laminar flow profile and necessary connecting pipes.

Production of aqueous polymer dispersions by radical initiated aqueous emulsion polymerisation of ethylenically unsaturated monomer(s) (I) comprises emulsifying (a) a mixture of (I) with radical initiator(s) and stable N-oxyl radical(s) or (b) a mixture of (I) with compound(s) which decompose on heating to give stable N-oxyl radicals and polymerisation initiating radical partners, with the aid of dispersants to give an aqueous emulsion with a disperse phase mainly comprising droplets with a diameter \} 500 nm, and then polymerising the emulsion at elevated temperature. Also claimed are the aqueous polymer dispersions.

A process for the prodn. of reusable fibre composite materials (FCM) contg. fibres (I) bonded together with a polymeric binder is claimed. The binder consists of an aq. dispersion of a polymer (II) which is film-forming at usage temps. and which goes entirely into soln. when the pH of the dispersion medium is changed. Also claimed is (i) material (FCM) obtd. by this process, esp. in the form of non-woven fabric or paper, and (ii) a process for recycling FCM, in which the FCM is treated with an aq. medium at a pH such that polymer (II) is dissolved to give fibres and binder soln., which are then sepd. and reused.
