    Abstract: A vibration-damping composition comprises (1) a filler which may be mica, vermiculite, kaolin, heavy spar, chalk or graphite, and (2) a thermoplastic binding agent consisting of a copolymer of a vinyl ester of a carboxylic acid with 2 to 4 carbon atoms and an unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon. The acid may be acetic, propionic or butyric acid. The hydrocarbon may be ethylene, propylene, butylene-(1), butylene-(2), isobutylene or butadiene. The copolymer may also contain 0,1 to 15% by weight of an unsaturated carboxylic acid such as acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, maleic, fumaric, or itaconic acids. Instead of these unsaturated carboxylic acids, it is also possible to use esters of maleic and/or fumaric and/or itaconic acids with linear or branched monohydric alcohols having 1 to 6 carbon atoms such as methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl, pentyl and hexyl alcohols. The copolymers can be prepared according to the usual emulsion polymerization processes using emulsifiers or protective colloids. Examples quoted contain vermiculite, china clay, or graphite as fillers and vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymers, vinyl acetate/ethylene/dibutyl fumarate copolymer, vinyl propionate/ethylene copolymer or vinyl propionate/ethylene/acrylic acid copolymer as the binding agent.

    Abstract: 1,3-Dienes are polymerized in aqueous emulsion using as catalyst of chelate complex compound of trivalent chromium, cobalt or gold, tetravalent cerium or divalent copper with a 1,3-dicarbonyl compound, or mixtures of said chelate complex compounds, in the absence of organic halogen compounds. The 1,3-di-carbonyl compound may be an ester of acetoacetic acid or of benzoyl-acetic acid with a linear or branched alkanol containing one to four carbon atoms, or acetylacetone or benzoyl acetone-cocatalysts e.g. ammonia and/or a water-soluble amine may also be present as may emulsifiers, buffers and regulators.
