Abstract: In the prepn. of a Ziegler catalyst component by (1) dry milling a Ti (III) or (IV) chloride, oxychloride or 1-8C alkoxy chloride, or mixed chloride TiCl3. AlCl3, (in which z is less than 5), with a chlorination prod.z of a cpd. of formula (Mea)6.(Meb)2(OH)16CO3(H2O)4, (in which Mea is Mg, Ca, Zn or Mn; Meb is Al or Cr), in wt. ratio 1:2-200 for 5-100 h. under milling acceleration of 4-6m/s2, (2) 1 part of the prod. is then mixed with 0.01-1 part 1-12C alkanol (V) and 1-1000 parts 5-12C alkene (VI) for 0.5-60 mins. at 0-195 degrees C. This is opt. followed by (3) mixing the suspension with a metal cpd. (VIII) of formula MtGs-tEt, (in which Mt is Al or Si; G is a 1-12C hydrocarbon gp. E is Cl, Br, H or -OD; D is as G; s is the valency of Mt; t is 0-2 when Mt is Al, or 0-4 when Mt is Si) until the atomic ratio Ti: mt is 1 : 0.5-20. Used for homo and co-polymerisation of 2-6C alpha-mono-olefins. Polymer yield per unit wt. of Ti is increased, and amt. of fine-grain polymer below 0.1 mm size is reduced.

Abstract: Prodn. of a Ti-contg. component for ziegler catalyst comprises first forming a dispersion by contacting (1) a suspension of (a) 100 pts. wt. of an inert liq. hydrocarbon and (b) 0.1-100 pts. wt. of a finely divded porous inorganic oxide material (I) with a particle size of 1-1000 mu, a pore vol. of 0.3-32 cm3/g. and a surface of 100-1000m2/g., with formula SiO2.aAl2O3 in which a =0-2, with (2) a soln. of (a) 100 pts. wt. of a liq. alcohol Z-OH in which Z is 1-8C satd. hydrocarbon gp., the alcohol being 10vol.% soluble in the inert hydrocarbon (1a), (b) 0.01-6 pts. wt. (as Ti) of a Ti trihalide in which the halogen is Cl and/or Br, and (c) 0.01-4 ptS. wt. (as Mg) of a Mg cpd. which is soluble in the alcohol (2a). The wt. ratio (I):T2 = 1:0.01-1:0.2 and the wt. ratio (I):Mg is 1:0.01-1:0.25. The resulting dispersion is then subjected to azeotropic distn. at 10-140 degrees C, opt. with replenishment of the hydrocarbon (1a), until alcohol is no longer present in the distillate, to form a suspension. Catalysts are less hazardous to handle and cause less environmental pollution than prior art carrier catalysts. The catalysts give high polymerisation yields and constant specific yields with time. The polymers produced have good morphological properties, esp. a high apparent density and a low fine grain content.

Abstract: A Ti contg. Ziegler catalyst is prepd. by (1) contacting a finely divided support (I) with a soln. comprising 100 pts. wt. alcohol (II) Z-OH (where Z is satd. 1-8C hydrocarbon), 0.01-6 pts. wt. (calculated as Ti) titanium trihalide where the halogen is Cl and/or Br and 0.01-4 pts. wt. (calculated as Mg) (II) soluble Mg cpd. of formula Mg6Alw(OH)xYy(B-OH)z (where Y is Cl or Br, B is 1-8C satd. hydrocarbon, w is 0-3, x is 0-8, y is 12+3w-z and z is 0-36) to form a dispersion, the wt. ratio of (I) to Ti being 1:0.01-1:0.02 and the wt. ratio of (I) to Mg being 1:0.01-1:0.25; and stripping the dispersion at 200 degrees C but above the m.pt. of (II) to form a solid intermediate prod. This is followed by (2) contacting the intermediate with an acyl halide (III) RCOX (where R is 1-18C satd. hydrocarbon opt. substd. by up to 3 Cl or Br atoms and X is F, Cl, Br or I) opt. dissolved in an organic solvent to form a suspension. The mol. ratio of Ti in the intermediate to (III) is 1:0.01-1:100. Mol. wt. of the polymers can be regulated with lower amts. of mol. wt. regulators esp. H2 and the polymers have improved morphological properties e.g. bulk density and flowability.

Abstract: A standard catalyst component contg. or consisting of TiCl3 is wetted with a hydrocarbon mixt. of 100 pts. vol. 5-7C alkane and 10-1000(50-150) pts. vol. benzene or an alkylbenzene boiling at 80-270 degrees C under standard conditions, provided wt. ratio catalyst component:wetting hydrocarbon mixt. is 1:0.5 to 1:100 (1:1 to 1:10). The wetted catalyst component is then dried under inert gas with constant stirring, in 0.5-5 (1-3) hrs., under 0.9-1.1 bar pressure. The drying temp. is 5-50 degrees C above the b.pt., under standard conditions, of the highest-boiling hydrocarbon in hydrocarbon wetting mixt. The component is used in the (co)polymerisation of 2-6C alpha-mono-olefins at 30-200 degrees C under 0.1-200 bar pressure, together with (II) an Al catalyst component having formula AlR3 or ClAlR2 (where R is 1-8C alkyl). Atomic ratio Ti:Al is 1:1 to 1:100. Use of component yields polymers having good morphological properties, e.g., narrow grain-size distribution. The formation of very fine-grained polymer, e.g., having grain size 200 mu, is suppressed or prevented.

Abstract: The method relates to a process for the preparation of propylene-ethylene polymers of the block copolymer type, in which, in each case in an agitated bed of finely divided polymer, from the gas phase, first I) in a first polymerisation zone propylene is homopolymerised by the feed of a Ziegler-Natta catalyst system comprising 1) a titanium (III) component, 2) a dialkylaluminium chloride component and 3) optionally a further catalyst component, and then II) in a second polymerisation zone a mixture of propylene and ethylene is polymerised onto the propylene homopolymer present in the reaction product obtained from the first polymerisation zone by the feed thereof, characterised in that, in the Ziegler-Natta catalyst system, a titanium (III) component 1) is employed for whose preparation 1.1) a titanium-containing compound a) of the formula TiCl3 . nAlCl3 and 1.2) an electron donor b) comprising an ester of a certain class, is subjected to a special grinding treatment which is distinguished, in particular, by particular metering and temperature conditions, and the resultant intermediate is suspended in a mixture of a liquid hydrocarbon c) and an oxygen-containing compound d) comprising an alcohol of a certain class, and the resultant suspension is then subjected to heat treatment, where the solid, which is then in the form of suspended material, is the titanium (III) component 1) employed for the polymerisation. The result is a polymer having improved morphological properties.
