    Abstract: In the prepn. of a new carrier catalyst, contg. a Cr-hydrocarbon complex cpd. on an inorganic oxide carrier, a Cr hydrocarbon-complex cpd. having formula RCrACrR (where R is a hydrocarbon or a ring- and/or open-chained hydrocarbyl gp. contg. 2 n or 2n + 1C atoms and 1-n non-heaped double bonds; n is integer 2-10 and A is cyclooctatetraene or a divalent n-octatetraene gp. in either of which up to 8 H atoms can be substd. by 1-4C alkyl gps.) is applied to a finely-divided, porous, inorganic-oxidic carrier. The carrier has particle dia. 1-1000 microns, pore vol. 0.3-3 cc/g, surface 100-1000 sq.m/g and formula SiO2.aAl2O3 (where a is no. 0-2). The carrier catalyst (I) whould contain 0.01-10 wt.% w.r.t. carrier (1,1), of complex cpd. (1,2), calculated as Cr. The catalyst is used in C2H4 homo-polymerisation or co-polymerisation with alpha-mono-olefins. Polymers can be obtd. having a wide mol.wt. distribution.

    Abstract: Catalyst compsn. contg. Ti and used for Ziegler catalysts is mfd. by firstly grinding together (i) a Ti cpd. having the formula TiCl3.zAlCl3 or ClmTiOB4m, where z is 0-0.5, m is 0-3, and B represents a 1-18C alkyl residue; (ii) a magnesium alcoholate (II) having the formula MgOD2, where D is a univalent 1-18C satd. aliphatic and/or aromatic hydrocarbon residue; and (iii) a metal chloride, i.e. AlCl3 or ZnCl2 or MnCl2. The wt. ratio of Ti cpd. to Mg alcoholate is 1:0.2-200 and the wt. ratio of Ti cpd. to ME chloride ranges from 1:0-20. Grinding is effected over 1-200 hrs. at 30-70 m/sec/sec. The prod. (IV) is then mixed with 1:0.01 to 1:1 pts. wt. of a 1-12C alkanol and 1:1 to 1:1000 of a 5-12C alkane to form a suspension (VII) and continuous mixing is effected over 0.5-60 mins. at 0-195 deg.C. The suspension is then treated with a metal cpd. having the formula Mt G-s-t Et, where Mt is Al, Si or Ti, G is a 1-12C residue, E is Cl, Br, H or an -OR residue, R is a 1-12C hydrocarbon residue, s is the highest valency of Mt, and t is a number from 0 to s-1 if Al, 0-4 if Si, or the number 4 if Ti. The suspension is maintained until the Mg content w.r.t. solids metal cpd. lies within the range of 1:0.1 to 1:20. The resulting solids compsn. is the catalyst contg. the Ti. Used pref. in the prodn. of ethylene homopolymers but can also be used for the prodn. of ethylene copolymers. Use of the catalyst reduces the amt. of halogen introduced into the polymer and achieves uniform polymer grain size and/or a redn. of fine-grain prod. and/or high bulk wt.

    Abstract: A Ti-contg. catalyst component for Ziegler catalysts is prepd. by grinding (I) a solid Ti cpd. chosen from (oxy)chlorides or 1-8C alkoxy chlorides of tri- to tetravalent Ti or TiCl3.Z(AlCl3) (where Z is 0.5) and (II) a halogen cpd. prepd. by heating a cpd. of formula (MII)6(MeIII)2(OH16)(CO3)(1(H2O)4 (where MeIII is Al or Cr and MII is Mg, Ca, Zn or Mn) for 1-100 hrs at 150-600 degrees C and then chlorinating to a Cl content of 40-76 wt.%. (I) and (II) are ground in a wt. ratio of (I):(II) of 1:200-1:2 for 5-100 hrs. at a grinding speed of 4-6 m/s2. The process is characterised by forming a suspension of the above prod. (III), a 1-12C alkanol (IV) and a 5-12C alkane (V) in a wt. ratio of (III):(IV) of 1:0.01-1:1 and wt. ratio of (III):(IV) of 1:1-1:1000, mixing the suspension continuously for 0.5-60 min. at 0-195 degrees C and reacting an acyl halide (VI) RCOX (where R is a satd. 1-18C hydrocarbon gp. which can be opt. substd. by up to 3 Cl or Br atoms and X is Cl, Br, F or I), with the suspension until the atom ratio of Ti in the suspension to halogen in (VI) is 1:0.01-1:100. The catalyst has overall improved properties.

    Abstract: Manufacture of polymers of alpha -monoolefins by polymerization with a Ziegler catalyst system comprising (1) a catalyst component containing titanium and/or vanadium and (2) a particular compound of the metals aluminum, magnesium or zinc. The characteristic feature of the process according to the invention is that the catalyst component (1) containing titanium and/or vanadium is the solid-phase product (VII) contained by first (1.1) bringing a finely divided porous inorganic oxidic material (I), which has the formula Al2O3 or SiO2.aAl2O3, where a is a number from 0 to 2, into contact with an aluminum compound (II) dissolved in an organic solvent, to form a solid-phase product (III), then (1.2) bringing the solid-phase product (III) obtained in stage (1.1) into contact with a magnesium compound (IV), dissolved in an organic solvent, to form a solid-phase product (V), and finally (1.3) bringing the solid-phase product (V) obtained in stage (1.2) into contact with a compound (VI) of the transition metals titanium and/or vanadium to form a solid-phase product (VII). This process functions better than comparable conventional processes.

    Abstract: A process for the preparation of ethylene homopolymers, and ethylene copolymers with minor amounts of higher alpha -monoolefins, by polymerizing the monomer or monomers by means of a supported catalyst (1) containing a chromium-hydrocarbon complex (1.2) on an inorganic oxide carrier (1.1), wherein (1) a supported catalyst is employed which contains (1.2) a chromium-hydrocarbon complex of the formula RCrACrR, where R is a cyclic and/or open-chain hydrocarbon, or hydrocarbon radical, of 2n and 2n+1 carbon atoms respectively and having from 1 to n non-cumulated double bonds, n being from 2 to 10, Cr is chromium and A is cyclooctatetraene, a divalent n-octatetraene radical or alkyl-substituted homologs thereof, on (1.1) a particular inorganic oxide carrier, with or without (2) a co-catalyst chosen from a particular group of alkyl-aluminum compounds. The process gives polymers having a particularly broad molecular weight distribution.

    Abstract: A process for the preparation of homopolymers and copolymers of alpha -monoolefins by polymerizing the monomer or monomers with a Ziegler catalyst system comprising (1) a titanium-containing catalyst component and (2) a relevant conventional organo-aluminum compound, (1.1) the catalyst component (1) having been prepared by (1.1.1) milling a titanium compound (I) of the formula TiCl3.z(AlCl3) or ClmTi(OB)4-m, where z is from 0 to 0.5, m is from 0 to 3 and B is alkyl, together with (1.1.2) a magnesium alcoholate (II) and, if desired, (1.1.3) a metal chloride (III) of the formula AlCl3, ZnCl2 or MnCl2, to form a milled product (IV), in which polymerization process a catalyst component (1) is employed, in the preparation of which (1.2) the milled product (IV) obtained according to (1.1) is brought together, in an additional step (1.2.1), with (1.2.2) an alkanol (V) and (1.2.3) a liquid alkane (VI), to form a suspension (VII), and thereafter (1.3), in a further additional step (1.3.1), there is added, to the suspension (VII) obtained according to (1.2), (1.3.2) a metal compound (VIII) of a certain type, the metal being aluminum, silicon or titanium, while preserving the suspension state, the product (IX), which results from stage (1.3) and is present as a solid phase in the suspension, constituting the titanium-containing catalyst component (1).
