Abstract: Process for the preparation of 1,2-dichloroethane by reacting ethylene, hydrogen chloride and oxygen in the presence of a supported catalyst, in the form of a solid bed, in only one reaction zone, separating 1,2-dichloroethane and water from the gas mixture leaving the reaction zone, and recycling the waste gas, which contains up to 20% by volume of ethylene, to the reaction zone, fresh ethylene, hydrogen chloride and oxygen being added to the waste gas.

Abstract: The polymers consist of polystyrene, polymeric mixts. of styrene (K value 54-72 pref. 63-70) plus propane (0.05-3 pref. 0.1-0.6 wt.%) as propellant and 7-15C (pref. 7-10C) (cyclo) aliphatic hydrocarbons (0.1-7.0 pref. 0.3-6.0 wt.%) e.g. isooctane. The polymeric mixt. pref. consists of alpha-methyl styrene, (meth) acrylonitrile, 1-8C alcoholic esters of (meth) acrylic or fumaric acids N-vinyl cpds. or e.g. divinyl benzene (0.001-1.0 pref. 0.01-0.1 wt.%). The polymers are frothed by steam or heated gases deposited for 24 hrs. at room temp. compressed in a perforated form and refrothed by superheated steam through the perforations. The prod. (particle diam. 0.1-6 pref. 0.4-5mm) is used in pearl, granular etc. form, in the mfre. of polystyrene foaming plastics with reduced contraction (=1%).

Abstract: Materials composed of styrene polymers, hydrocarbons or fluorine-containing halogen hydrocarbons as blowing agents and a cell regulator and other additives, contain 0.1 - 8 wt.% polyisobutylene of M.W. 1000 - 100000 and 0.5 - 5 wt.% of an ester of phthalic acid or of an aliphatic acid with 10- 40 C atoms. Pref. shaped articles of foam polystyrene are prepared by extruding the above material. Advantages lie in the increased resistance to cold, improved ductility and the finer, more homogeneous cell-structure.

Abstract: 1,163,730. Moulding compositions. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 13 Jan., 1967 [15 Jan., 1966], No. 1928/67. Headings C3C and C3P. Particulate moulding compositions consisting of a mixture of a styrene polymer and an expanding agent, wherein the particles contain 0.001-0.6% by weight of the styrene polymer, in homogeneous distribution, of a brominated polymer of a 1,3-diene may be made by polymerizing monomeric styrene in a heating process, with or without other monomers, in the presence of an expanding agent and the brominated polymers and then cooling, or polymerizing styrene in aqueous suspension and adding the bromine compounds, with or without the expanding agent during polymerization at a point when the particles no longer divide. Exemplified styrene polymers are polystyrene and styrene copolymers which contain at least 50% by weight of styrene units. The copolymerization units include 2, methylstyrene, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, esters of acrylic or methacrylic acids and alcohols having 1-8 C, esters of fumaric acid and alcohols having 1-8 C, vinyl pyridine, N-vinyl compounds such as N-vinyl carbazole, butadiene or small amounts of divinylbenzene. Examples of suitable brominated polymers of 1,3-dienes are the bromination products of butadiene polymers, isoprene polymers and chloroprene polymers. Specific examples of suitable brominated polymers are 1,2,5,6 - tetrabromocyclododecane, brominated cyclo-octadiene - (1,5), 1,2,5,6,9,10- hexabromocyclododecane, brominated 1-vinylcyclohexene-(3) or brominated polybutadiene which has a linear structure. Bromination is carried out using elemental bromine, the reaction being carried out in solution or dispersion. Suitable solvents are n-butanol, CS 2 , glacial acetic acid or CCl 4 .
