Abstract: A 3-step process for preparation of polymer dispersions from monomers by emulsion polymerization involves: (a) addition (sic) of water as inert solvent and dispersion agent; (b) addition of initiator; and (c) addition of part or the whole amount of monomers directly or as an emulsion in the presence of further water and emulsion polymerization at 40-120 deg C is new. A process for preparation of polymer dispersions from monomers from alkyl (meth)acrylates, 1-20C vinyl esters of carboxylic acids, vinylaromatic compounds, nitriles, vinyl halogens, vinylether, 2-8C hydrocarbon with one or two double bonds, or OH group containing monomers by emulsion polymerization at least at 40 deg C in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator. At least 85% of the polymer obtained from one or more of these monomers is prepared in the three steps: (a) addition (sic) of water as inert solvent and dispersion agent; (b) addition of initiator; and (c) addition of part or the whole amount of monomers directly or as an emulsion in the presence of further water and optionally dispersing agent, and emulsion polymerization at 40-120 deg C. Steps (a) to (c) can be individual steps or can be part of a gradient process, and in the individual or all the stages the reaction medium dispersion is fed to the polymerization vessel (2) through an external circuit (10), which has one or more low shear cylinders or membrane pumps (7) and at least one heat exchanger (8) of essentially laminar streaming profile. An Independent claim is included for the apparatus for storage and addition of the reaction and adjuvant materials, a reaction vessel (2), a heating/cooling jacket (3), a device (6) for discharging the vessel (2), an external circuit (10), with one or more low shear supply cylinders or membrane pumps, at least one heat exchanger (8) with a laminar or turbulent profile ,and connecting pipes (20).

Abstract: Aqueous polymer dispersion (A) prepared by radical-initiated aqueous emulsion polymerization of monomer mixtures (M1, M2) added according to a specific feed procedure. Polymerization is performed in a vessel fed with a monomer stream (m) formed from partial streams, m1 and/or m2, of M1 and M2, respectively, and during the process the proportion of m2 in m increases. At the start of feeding, m comprises at least 90wt.% M1 but at the end it contains at least 90wt.% M2. When used alone, M1 produces a polymer of glass transition temp (Tg1) not over 50 deg C while M2, alone, produces a polymer with similar temperature (Tg2) over 50 deg C, with at least a 10 deg C difference between Tg1 and Tg2. The ratio of total amounts of M1 and M2 is 20:80 to 60:40. An Independent claim is also included for a method of producing (A).

Abstract: Aqueous preparations containing: (i) a film-forming copolymer with monomer units derived from ureas, thioureas or imidazolidin-2-ones with unsaturated substituents; and (ii) a compound with 2 or more aldehyde groups are used for coating polyurethane (PU)-based substrates. The use of aqueous preparations for coating PU-based substrates is claimed. These preparations contain: (i) dispersed film-forming polymer(s) (A) derived from unsaturated monomers (M) comprising monomer(s) (M1) of formula (I) and comonomer(s) (M2); and (ii) compound(s) (B) with two or more aldehyde groups, in which: R , R = H or 1-5C alkyl, or R + R may form a 2-4C alkylene group, optionally substituted with 1 or 2 1-5C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy and/or hydroxyl groups; X = oxygen or sulfur; R = a 2-20C mono-unsaturated residue. Independent claims are also included for: (a) a process for coating water-repellent PU-based substrates by applying these preparations to the substrate; (b) aqueous preparations containing 10-50 wt.% polymer (A), 0.05-5 wt.% compound(s) (B) (based on A), 10-70 wt.% inorganic fillers and/or pigments, 0.1-20 wt.% conventional additives etc. and water to 100 wt.%, in which (A) is a copolymer of 70-95 wt% n-butyl and/or 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, 5-25 wt.% styrene, methyl methacrylate and/or tert.-butyl methacrylate, 0.1-5 wt.% monomer(s) M1 and 0.1-5 wt.% monomer(s) M3.
