Abstract:
New gel compositions which comprise a carbonaceous component attached to a gel component. Preferably, the carbonaceous component is selected from the group consisting of: carbon blacks, carbon fibers, activated carbons and graphitic carbons; and the gel component is selected from the group consisting of: metal oxide gels and polymeric gels. Also disclosed are new gel compositions comprising: a gel component and a carbon black product having attached at least one organic group, the organic group comprising: a) at least one aromatic group, and b) at least one ionic group, at least one ionizable group, or a mixture of an ionic group and an ionizable group, wherein at least one aromatic group of the organic group is directly attached to the carbon black. Further disclosed are new gel compositions comprising: a gel component and a carbon black product having attached at least one organic group, the organic group comprising: a) at least one C1-C12alkyl group, and b) at least one ionic group, at least one ionizable group, or a mixture of an ionic group and an ionizable group, wherein at least one alkyl group of the organic group is directly attached to the carbon black. Uses for the gel compositions are also disclosed.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide modified pigment products that provide good dispersibility and imaging performance in printing plate applications, as well as in applications including electrophoretic displays, inks, coatings, and plastics.SOLUTION: The present invention relates to modified pigment products comprising a pigment having attached at least one organic group represented by the formula: -X-Sp-Alk (wherein X, which is directly attached to the pigment, represents an arylene, heteroarylene, or alkylene group, Sp represents a spacer group, and Alk represents an alkenyl or alkyl group containing 50-200 carbon atoms). The use of these modified pigment products in non-aqueous dispersion compositions and in several applications, including printing plates, electrophoretic displays, liquid crystal displays, and ink, coating, toner, and polymer compositions is also disclosed.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printing plate containing pigment like carbon black having improved dispersibility.SOLUTION: The printing plate includes a) a substrate and b) a radiation absorption layer. The radiation absorption layer contains at least one modified pigment product comprising pigment where at least one organic ionic group and at least one amphiphilic counter ion are bonded. The amphiphilic counter ion has the charge opposite to a charge of the organic ionic group.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved process for incorporating modified pigments into polymer compositions.SOLUTION: A method of preparing a polymer composition containing at least one polymer and at least one modified pigment involves introducing at least one slurry containing at least one modified pigment into an aqueous polymer solution to form a mixture, wherein, at this stage, the aqueous polymer solution has not been dewatered, and then dewatering the mixture to form the polymer composition.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide modified carbon products, and to provide inks and coatings comprising the modified carbon black products. SOLUTION: There is disclosed the modified carbon product which comprises carbon having attached with at least one organic group wherein the organic group comprises (a) at least one aromatic group or 1-12C alkyl group, and (b) an ion group or an ionic group having formula -AG-Sp-LG-Z, wherein AG is an activating group, Sp is a spacer group having an active group which promotes leaving of LG, Z is a counterion, and wherein the aromatic or the 1-12C alkyl group is directly attached to the carbon, and wherein the organic group is present in any amount. Modifikované sadze majú hodnotu vonkajšej povrchovej plochy STSA od 70 m2/g do 250 m/g a anelovaný povrch získaný tepelným spracovaním, pričom týmito modifikovanými sadzami sú retortové sadze, ktoré majú deaktivovaný povrch a majú na seba naviazanú a/alebo adsorbovanú aspoň jednu chemickú skupinu. Tieto modifikované sadze majú obsah polyaromatických uhľovodíkov (PAU) 75 ppm alebo menej. Opisuje sa spôsob výroby týchto sadzí a elastomérna kompozícia, obsahujúca uvedené modifikované sadze a výrobok, ako je pneumatika alebo jej časť, obsahujúci túto elastomérnu kompozíciu. Opisuje sa spôsob zlepšovania odolnosti proti oderu alebo hysterézie elastomérnej kompozície, pri ktorom sa do tejto elastomérnej kompozície pred jej vulkanizáciou zavedú uvedené modifikované sadze.

Elastomeric compositions are described which have at least one functionalized elastomer and at least one modified filler which has adsorbed and/or attached chemical groups, such as a triazole and/or pyrazole thereon, orother modified fillers which are also described. Methods are further described to improve hysteresis and/or abrasion resistance in elastomeric compositions containing a functionalized elastomer using the modified fillers of the present invention.
