Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a self-routing function by performing purely optical cross bar switching between an input and an output. CONSTITUTION:For example, multimode optical fibers 46 and 47 are connected to both sides of a phase conjugate mirror 41 through wavelength dispersing elements 42 and 43 which use diffraction gratings, etc. When pieces 52 and 54, and 50 and 48 of incident luminous flux from an input/output side are made incident on the phase conjugate mirror 41, mutual operation is caused by the induced scattering between pieces of luminous flux whose wavelengths match each other to generate phase conjugate waves 53 and 55, and 52 and 49. Therefore, the input/output channels (channels of the pieces 52 and 53 of input-side luminous flux and channels of the pieces 50 and 51 of output-side luminous flux) of the pieces of luminous flux whose wavelengths match each other are connected and the connected channels can be confirmed by the detection of the phase conjugate wave 53.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To allow the execution of 100% mode conversion even if th phase matching between modes is not executed by simultaneously applying an electric field and magnetic field to a waveguide to induce the mode conversion by an electro-optical effect and magneto-optical effect within the same region, thereby compensating the degradation in the mode conversion efficiency by phase mismatching. CONSTITUTION:This optical isolator is constituted of a GaAs substrate 31, a buffer layer 32, a lower clad layer 33, a core layer 34, an upper clad layer 35, a mesa structure 36, and electrodes 37, 38. The isolator has the waveguide consisting of a magnetic semiconductor, such as CdMnTe, and induces the mode conversion between the orthogonal modes of TE light, TM light, etc., by the electro-optical effect and magneto-optical effect within the same region by simultaneously impressing the electric field E and the magnetic field H to the waveguide. The degradation in the mode conversion efficiency by the phase mismatching is compensated. The 100% mode conversion is attained in this way even if the phase matching between the modes is not executed.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To reproduce a desired optical pulse signal train information from an optical pulse train that undergone the time division multiplex modulation in a picosecond time area. CONSTITUTION:Each signal data pulse train is reproduced in real time from an optical data pulse train 21 that undergone the time division multiplexing. The train 21 is spatially increased, and also the wave head is tilted. A probe pulse 25 is also spatially increased. Both optical data and probe pulses are made incident on a medium 27 having the double photon absorbing effect so that these pulses cross spatially to each other. Then the output light that received the nonlinear transmission factor dependent on the time overlapping state of both data and probe pulses undergone the time division multiplexing is detected as the information on a spatial pattern.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To minimize variations in the coherence and in-use wavelength of input light with time by performing logical arithmetic operation for input images inputted to PR crystal by utilizing the oscillation threshold value of the PR crystal. CONSTITUTION:The PR crystal 4 with optically induction refractive effect (PR effect) is arranged at some part in a ring resonator and the oscillation threshold value of the PR crystal 4 is utilized to perform the logical operation between input images 1 and 2 inputted to the PR crystal 4. In this case, laser light 9 is made incident as pump light on the PR crystal 4 to put the resonator in an oscillation state, and the input images 1 and 2 are made incident on the PR crystal 4 from outside to control the oscillation state of the resonator; and output light from the resonator is used to perform the logical arithmetic result of the input images 1 and 2. Therefore, an optical image arithmetic unit of simple constitution is obtained which is hardly affected by variations in coherence and wavelength and has stable heat resistance and stability.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To perform parallel optical arithmetic through compact constitution by providing a surface light emitting means which emits four different wavelength light beams, and transmitting selectively and photodetecting individually four wavelength light beams as to pieces of luminous flux corresponding to input images. CONSTITUTION:The surface emitting means 11 is constituted by arraying plural LEDs which emit red light R, green light G, blue light B, and infrared light I and providing a light diffusing plate on the surface, and respective color light beams are turned on and off under independent control. Films A and B have an encoded input and a mosaic filter 12 is constituted by arraying optical filters which transmit light beams R, G, B, and I partially in two dimensions. A photodiode array 13 has photodiodes arrayed in two dimensions and photodetects light transmitted through the filter 12. Segments aij and bij of the films A and B, segments fij of the film 12, and segments pij of the array 13 are arranged overlapping, thereby performing numbers of logical operations simultaneously through the compact constitution.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To attain miniaturization of a photomagnetic information reader by using a polarization element containing a polarizer an analyzer unified in body. CONSTITUTION:A part of a collimated incident luminous flux 2 transmits through a non-coated part 20 of a reflection coated 18 beam splitter 6 and is made incident to the incident luminous flux surface of a polarization element 22 servig as a polarizing means. The polarization surface of the reflected luminous flux is rotated in response to the magnetizing direction of a recording medium 10. The change of said rotation amount transmits through the element 22 and is converted into an intensity change of the reflected luminous flux. That is, the record contents of the medium 10 are finally detected in the form of an intensity change of the reflected luminous flux. Thus it is possible to eliminate the use of both a polarizer and an analyzer having a high quenching ratio used with a conventional photomagnetic information reader. Then a new miniature information reader is obtained with use of the element 22 containing a polarizer and an analyzer unified in a body.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide an light modulator or switch of a purely optical type having a relatively high speed response time and possibility of a large contract ratio by performing the modulation of luminous flux fully optically utilizing changes in refractive indices through electro-optical effect. CONSTITUTION:When a resonance pump light beam 19 enters a semiconductor quantum well structure area, a pair of electrons and positive holes are excited by an external electric field Eext in a well 18 having a sloped band structure. The excited electrons 15 and positive holes 13 run within the well 18 respectively in opposite directions to each other. Space electric charge separation is produced here and a counter electric field Es is produced in the direction to screen the external electric field. As a result, in addition to the electro-optical effect due to originally applied external electric field, an electro optical effect due to the counter electric field is produced to change finally the electro-optical effect. Therefore, optical anisotropy of the semiconductor quantum well structure area is changed by the appearance of the counter electric field. The change in the optical anisotropy is detected with a probe light beam which is modulated with a pump light beam 19.
