Abstract: The source comprises columns (4) emitting electrons and rows (6) of which the potential develops up to a positive value VI. The screen also comprises at least one supplementary column (24) common to all the rows, means (28) for carrying this supplementary column to a negative potential such that, irrespective of the potential of the rows which it crosses over, electrons may be emitted in the crossover zones, at least one supplementary anode (26) facing the supplementary column and means (30) for carrying this supplementary anode to a positive potential lower than VI. Each row is controlled by a single output transistor (32) which, when the latter is on, carries the line to VI and which, when off, disconnects the line from the voltage source VI. The system comprises at least one resistive zone (56) and at least two control electrodes (52, 54), this resistive zone and these control electrodes being arranged substantially at the same level as the source, these control electrodes being furthermore placed on either side of the resistive zone and intended for polarising the latter, the electrical resistance profile of the resistive zone being chosen so as to have the distribution of potential making it possible to obtain the desired form of the beam emanating from the source when the control electrodes are suitably polarised. Application to the focusing of a charged particle beam.
