Abstract: The potential hazards of acraldhyde make its direct handling for combatting microbial, vegetable and animal pests in the water and ground difficult. According to the invention, use is made of a composition releasing acraldhyde in contact with water at the point of use. The composition of the invention contains an acraldehyde acetal, preferably 2-vinyl-2, 3-dioxolane, and a compound hydrolysable to an acide with a pKs of lower than 4, especially one from the range of organic acid anhydrides, organic acid halides and inorganic halogen compounds forming hydrogen halides on hydrolysis.

Abstract: Process for desulphurisation of moist SO2-contg. exhaust gases, with recovery of pure H2SO4, by contacting the gases with aq. H2O2 at temps. below 60 deg.C comprises freeing the raw gas from the identified temp. condensable components in a condenser at 5-40 deg.C, the condenser outlet gas is introduced into a vessel contg. aq. H2O2 initially at a concn. of 5-70% w/w H2O2, until the H2O2 has produced a stoichiometric equiv. of H2SO4, with the reaction end point being electrometrically determined, and the Redox electrode providing on/off control for the gas inlet flow. USE/ADVANTAGE - Conversion of harmful SO2 contg. gas effluents into economically valuable sulphuric acid, and avoiding mud/solids handling problems of existing process, e.g. in the treatment of gases from the sulphite preservation of grape juice in the winemaking industry.

Abstract: A method for the removal of nitrogen oxides from waste gases and for obtaining nitric acid is described. The waste gas is charged with the required amount of hydrogen peroxide, converted into the gas phase, and the gas mixture is reacted on a solid catalyst to hydrogen nitrate, which is either withdrawn for further use or is converted into nitric acid either by condensation or by scrubbing with water. The method permits the removal of NOx at low concentrations below 2000 ppm with efficiencies above 90%.
