    Abstract: A central controller (CC) [22] of a wireless Local area network (LAN) [20], in conjunction with an association operation with a mobile terminal [24] and upon receiving from the mobile terminal (MT) a first control signal [CS1] of a sequence of control signals involved in the association operation, pre-reserves a MAC resource for transmission of at least a further control signal in the sequence. The MAC resource for the further control signal is pre-reserved prior to information for the further control signal being stored in a transmission buffer [58] of the mobile terminal. In essence, judging from the nature of the first control signal, the central controller (CC) anticipates eventuality of the further control signal and pre-reserves the MAC resource for the further control signal. The central controller (CC) pre-reserves the MAC resource to avoid transmission of a separate message to request a MAC resource for the further control signal. The association operation for which the pre-reservation occurs can be, for example, an initial association scenario or a handover scenario in which the mobile terminal (MT) is handed over to the central controller (CC).

    Abstract: The invention discloses a method for use in a wireless communications system with a plurality of broadcasting nodes, comprising the step of enabling one node in the system to function as a central node in said system and letting said node enable measurements on at least one frequency in a frequency band used by the system. Said measurements are carried out to detect if said at least one frequency is being utilized by a transmitter foreign to the system. Preferably, the measurement is enabled by means of the node transmitting a message to other nodes in the system, said message being a message pre-defined within the system as a message prohibiting all nodes from transmitting during a certain interval, said message being transmitted after the system has been detected by the node to be silent during a predefined interval between frame transmissions from the nodes in the system.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a method and system for reducing the delay of the transmission of packet data including receiving data from a network via a base station and assigning a mobile station to a packet channel having an active mode and a variable fast page mode. Packet data is exchanged in the active mode until a first inactivity timer expires. The base station and mobile station are then switched to a variable fast page mode in which additional packet data can be exchanged, wherein the variable fast page mode has a greater delay between transmission opportunities than the active mode. The variable fast page mode schedules specific time slots which are monitored for the transmission and receipt of successive packets. In addition, the periodicity of future time slots can vary based on the delay between the successive packets. The mobile station remains in variable fast page mode until the expiration of a second inactivity timer or at the reception of a transmission opportunity and subsequent data transfer to or from the mobile station.

The wireless station supports transmission of data in frames of variable length. Frame fragmentation is implemented by dividing a (long) frame into a number of frame fragments. Each fragment is sent as a non-fragmented frame. The length of a time period before or between transmission of (consecutive) frame fragments is controlled in order to decrease energy consumption during a predetermined time interval.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for caching mobile station location information comprising a gateway packet switch node for receiving and transmitting data packets between a plurality of visiting packet switch nodes and at least one communication network and a cache memory located within the gateway packet switch node for caching location information received with a data packet from a transmitting mobile station. A communication packet, containing information pertaining to the location of a transmitting mobile station is received by the gateway packet switch node. The location information is extracted from the received communication packet and cached. When an incoming data packet is received by the gateway packet switch node, a determination is made as to whether the location information for the destination mobile station is stored within the cache. If the location information is stored within the cache the location information is retrieved from the cache and the data packet is routed to the mobile station. Otherwise, the location information is retrieved from a home location register and the data packet is routed to the mobile station.

    Abstract: A telecommunication system comprises a radio network controller (RNC), and a Node-B (NB) for enabling wireless communication with a user terminal (UE). The RNC establishes an enhanced dedicated transport channel (E-DCH) which enables uplink data traffic with a determined maximum data rate from the user terminal (UE) to the NB. The RNC further establishes a high speed DL shared channel (HS-DSCH) which enables downlink data traffic with a determined maximum data rate from the NB to the user terminal. The NB comprises a HSDPA scheduler (HS-S) scheduling the data rate for the DL data traffic via the HS-DSCH and a EUL scheduler (EUL-S) scheduling the maximum data rate for the UL data traffic via the E-DCH. The NB exchanges data rate information between the HS-S and the EUL-S. Furthermore, the NB monitors the quotient (Q) between DL data rate and the UL data rate. When Q fulfils determined traffic conditions the HSDPA scheduler (HS-S) and/or the EUL scheduler (EUL-S) changes the allocation and/or the priority handling of the UL and/or the DL resources.
