    Abstract: TRIVALENT CHROMIUM ELECTROPLATING SOLUTION AND BATH A chromium electroplating solution in which the source of chromium is an aqueous solution of chromium (III) complexes. The complexes are selected from a solution of chromium (III) and at least one of aspartic acid or an organic compound having a -C=S group or a -C-S- group. A supporting electrolyte is chloride free and comprises a mixture of sodium and potassium sulphates in a concentration sufficient to provide electrical conductivity for the plating process. The concentration of sodium sulphate is in the range of about 0.1 to 1 Molar and the concentration of potassium sulphate is about 1 Molar.

    Abstract: A process for electroplating chromium comprising pre-treating the surface of a part to be plated with chromium by forming a deposit of a sulphur compound thereon, which sulphur compound accelerates the reduction of chromium ions to chromium metal. Preferably the deposit is formed cathodically in a solution containing a sulphur species. The sulphur species include thiocyanate, or species having S-O or S-S bonds: or a species having a -C=S or -C-S group within the molecule. Alternatively the sulphur compound can be chemically deposited by evaporating sulphur on to the surface or by immersing the part in a solution of sulphide ions.

    Abstract: A very low concentration trivalent chromium plating bath in which the source of chromium is an aqueous solution of a chromium (III)- thiocyanate complex (Cr less than 0.03 M) gives a deposit of unexpectedly light colour. Such a bath is employed to produce thin overcoatings of light coloured chromium and may replace the rinse tank of a first chromium (III)- thiocyanate process which is optimized for efficiency and bath stability rather than colour.

    Abstract: A miniature Kerr effect probe is described which may be used to examine surfaces of magnetic material during electroplating or vacuum deposition, without requiring a specially shaped bath or chamber. The probe consists of a U-shaped core with adjacent pole tips of soft magnetic material wound with a coil to provide a magnetic field across the ends of the arms of the core which constitute probe tips. In use, these probe tips are placed adjacent to a surface being examined. Optic fibers are used to direct light to and from the surface. The polarizer and analyzer required for Kerr work may be at the probe tips or remote from the probe tips due to the availability of optic fibers which will transmit polarized light without distortion. The light beam at the probe tips may be collimated or focussed by the optic fiber.
