Abstract: The present invention uses three separate methods to provide the user with sounds that help the user understand where a particular current position is relative to an "location of interest" (LOI) within the viewable object. First, the user is able to use sound marks to mark specific LOIs within viewable objects so that the user may return to those LOIs at a later time. Second, the user is provided with view regions which aurally indicate the LOI of frequently used portions of the viewable object. Lastly, the user is given an aural indication of the current position of the position identifier relative to the viewable object as a whole. This is called relational positioning. Each type of aural LOI indication can be presented to the user regardless of how the user is moving through the viewable object.

Abstract: The performance of a given task is optimized by utilizing an intelligent agent (42) having a plurality of program modules (42') suited to perform the computer task but having varied degrees of domain knowledge. Based upon an objective criteria that may be determined for a given situation, one or more of the program modules (42') in the intelligent agent (42) may be selected to perform the task, thereby optimizing the performance of the computer task for a wide variety of situations.

Abstract: A sales promotion program is dynamically selected from a plurality of programs for presentation in a program presentation unit by a neural network that makes its selection based on first detecting if a person is in the area immediately around the program presentation unit, then either selecting a general attract loop sales promotion program with the trained neural network using a set of predetermined system criteria if no person is detected in the immediate area or selecting a specific loop sales promotion program if at least one person is detected in the immediate area. The neural network is trained by selecting general attract loop programs that are run and then collecting data indicative of the number of persons responding to the general attract loop and also by selecting specific loop programs that are run if a person is in the immediate area and then collecting data indicative of the responses to the specific loop programs. The collected data thereby represents the success of the various sales programs in attracting and holding the attention of persons. The collected data is provided to the neural network in any one of a plurality of training schemes typical for neural networks, after which the trained neural network is provided with current, real-time selection data such that the trained network can select the most appropriate sales promotion program for running. The network can be retrained at regular intervals or in response to sales data or changes in the collected data.

Abstract: A syntax checker that simultaneously provides real-time feedback to the user regarding more than one syntactic requirement is disclosed. Also disclosed is a password validation mechanism that checks a submitted password string against the requirements of more than one password-protected resource and provides visual feedback to the user regarding success or failure. Abstract: A television presentation and editing system uses closed captioning text to locate items of interest. A closed captioning decoder (103) extracts a closed captioning digital text stream from a television signal. A viewer specifies one or more keywords to be used as search parameters. A digital processor (104) executing a control program scans the closed captioning digital text stream for words or phrases matching the search parameters. The corresponding segment of the television broadcast may then be displayed, edited or saved. In one mode of operation, the television presentation system may be used to scan one or more television channels unattended, and save items which may be of interest to the viewer. In another mode of operation, the system may be used to assist editing previously stored video by quickly locating segments of interest.
