    Abstract: A variable bandwidth wireless air-link communication system allows an end-user communicating device, e.g. a cellular phone (101), computer or facsimile, to request the allocation and aggregation of available air-link communication channels for the wireless transmission of messages to and from a mobile end-user communication subscriber unit, e.g. a cellular telephone or portable computer (108), so as to increase the speed of wireless transmission. The system uses a channelized communication radio (103) and a programmed microprocessor (105) for locating, reserving and aggregating available air-link channels and for transmitting messages between the communication devices.

    Abstract: A method for providing privately viewable data in a publicly viewable display comprises the steps of: generating a sequencing pattern; generating a data signal having interspersed frames of private data among frames of masking data according to the sequencing pattern; providing the data signal to the publicly viewable display; and, opening and closing shutters in a set of active glasses in accordance with the sequencing pattern. In one embodiment, the sequencing pattern can correspond to alternating displays of the private data and the masking data. In an alternative embodiment, the sequencing pattern can correspond to combined left eye/right eye images of the private data. In the preferred embodiment, the masking data can be a fill pattern, for example, random data or a screen saver image. However, in another embodiment, the masking data can be a derivation of the private data. The step of opening and closing the shutters can comprise the step of responsive to sync pulses in the sequencing pattern, opening and closing the shutters. In consequence of the preferred method, a user viewing the display with the active glasses can view the private data and unauthorized viewers without the active glasses can view only the private data obscured by the masking data. The private data may be characters which are made up of subsets of dots 54 transmitted over a plurality of frames 56, 58, 60 whereby the persistence of vision of the viewer integrates the dots to form whole characters.

    Abstract: A video processing personalization system or server (VPPS) coupled to at least one source of video and audio content and to at least one end user unit for providing a personalized perspective of a broadcast event. The VPPS includes a receiver for receiving composite video signals representing more than one than one perspective of the broadcast program. An input receives signals representing a selection of at least one of the perspectives of the broadcast program; and a transmitter presents the selected perspective or perspectives to an end user. The VPPS can be implemented at various points along the distribution route from the source to the user (viewer). This represents a new business model for content distribution.

    Abstract: A user through a personal computer, in real time, controls the activation and selection of voice and data transmission paths in a communication network independent of network profiles. The network includes a public switched telephone network and a data network, e.g. the Internet for voice and/or data transmissions over either the voice or data networks. In the network, a voice terminal and a computer terminal are coupled to a shared voice and data terminal. A digital subscriber line access multiplexer is coupled to the shared voice and data terminal; the data network through a client server interface, and a voice network through an intelligent switch. The client server interface includes programmable stored data descriptive of network-authorized data and voice functions and transmission paths in the voice and data networks. The interface is linked to the multiplexer and switch for transmitting signaling messages directing traffic to the voice and data networks in accordance with the stored data. The computer terminal displays menus obtained from the client server which enable the user, in real time, to activate and select voice and/or data transmission paths through either the voice and/or data networks independent of pre-defined network profiles and/or traditional traffic assumptions.

    Abstract: A conference server system, for internal use in the public switched telephon e network (PSTN), links to public data communication networks (e.g. the Internet) for distributing computer displayable data between participants in voice telephone conference s. The server system includes a computer sub-system for storing data generated by t he participants and distributing the data in coordination with voice presentati ons of respective participants. Data so stored and distributed includes computer-displayable d ata. Other data handled by the computer subsystem represents commands and functional re quests issued by participants which pertain to the handling of computer-displayable data and voice parameters of the conference. Conference participants, having separate and c oncurrent access to both the PSTN and the data network, receive and view computer-disp layable data prepared by one of the participants in coordination with the respective voice conference. The conference server system connects to voice conference manage mentresources of the PSTN in a manner enabling the serve r system to control voice parameters of a voice conference in response to data requests received from participants (e.g. requests from hearing-impaired participants for enhanced audio service ), as well as enabling the conference management resources to control functions performed in respect to distribution of displayable data in response to spoken requests uttered b y the participants, when the telephone system contains appropriate speech recognit ion equipment. Telephone system conferences utilizing the present conference ser ver system have the advantage of being usable to support voice-only and/or data-only pa rticipants (participants respectively linked to only the voice or data distribution par ts of a conference session), as well as to provide conference service between exactly two parti cipants which may be more effective than comparable services that the same two participant s would obtain using a direct dial-up telephone connection for voice and a public da ta network connection completely isolated from the voice conference management resource s of the PSTN to exchange data.

    Abstract: This invention allows customers and other users of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to enable, disable or modify special services provided by the net work. The PSTN is defined here as all equipment world wide (land-based, radio or other ) enabling ordinary telephone users to connect to other telephone users, but exclu des private telephone networks such as "tie line" systems maintained or leased by pr ivate enterprises. Presently contemplated actions can be taken independent of the sta te of the customer's telephone line (e.g. on-hook or off-hook), and usually involve use of equipment other than telephones and communication networks other than the PSTN (e.g. compu ters operating through the Internet and pagers operating through pager networks). Th e special services include existing services (call waiting, call blocking, call forwarding , etc.) and new ones (e.g. transferring an active call from a desk phone to a mobile cellular on e without interrupting the call). Security firewalls, between the public and telephony ap plication intelligence (TAI) systems that administer customer services within the PSTN, en sure that actions by unauthorized individuals do not interfere with or adversely affect te lephone system operations. Authorized customers taking presently contemplated actions w ill not be able to adversely affect telephone system operations. The present system wil l work on information maintained at any level of an intelligent network hierarchy within t he PSTN, including service nodes through which customer services are traditionally provid ed.
