Abstract: CAPACITIVE TWO DIMENSIONAL TABLET WITH SINGLE CONDUCTIVE LAYER A new capacitive tablet has a single layer in which electrodes provide capacitive coupling with a pen to produce signals that correspond to the X and Y dimensions of the position of the pen on the tablet. The electrodes in the single layer are in the form of pairs of complementary shaped, closely adjacent, conductive elements that extend in the Y dimension of the tablet. For sensing the pen position in the Y dimension, an alternating voltage is applied between the two elements of a pair and the pen receives a signal that is a function of the pen position in the Y dimension. The tablet includes a number of such pairs, each having a different X dimension position, and for sensing the pen position in the X dimension, the two electrodes of a pair are given an alternating voltage that differs progressively across the X dimension of the tablet.

Abstract: An improved tablet system is disclosed of the type having an array of X dimension wires and Y dimension wires that are capacitively coupled to a pen that a user holds to the tablet to produce a position signal. The X and Y wires are individually coupled to drivers so that the wires on one side of the pen position can be activated and the wires on the other side can be not activated for a pen position sensing operation. To reduce the number of drivers required for a large tablet, the wires are arranged in groups with an individual driver capacitively coupled to a correspondingly positioned wire in each group. A new packaging arrangement is provided and a new system is provided for addressing the drivers to produce the selected activation pattern.

Abstract: 1278029 Position transducers INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 19 April 1971 [30 April 1970] 23176/71 Heading G1N A transducer for converting the position of a stylus on a tablet into an electric signal comprises a serpentine conductor to at least two non-colinear portions of which the stylus is capacitively coupled. As shown in Fig. 1, the transducer includes a plastics, glass, or epoxy surface 14 and X and Y co-ordinate grids 12, 10 alternately energized with alternating current to provide alternate X and Y signals to circuits 23, 21. Each X or Y measurement period consists of two parts, a first part in which one end of the appropriate grid is connected to an A. C. source 18 and the other end is earthed, and a second in which both ends of the grid are connected to source 18, to provide a reference signal. Exemplary dimensions are given. The cross connections may be of a different material from the rest of the grids. Alternatively, the grids may be continually energized at different frequencies. The grids may correspond to polar co-ordinates.

Abstract: An electroluminescent device is used to produce a scanning beam of radiation. Fig. 2 shows an equivalent circuit of the device which may be a composite semi-conductor device (Fig. 1, not shown) having gallium arsenide or phosphide type light emitting sources 29, producing the scanning beam. The operation of the circuit of Fig. 2 is described with reference to its function in investigating a radiation pattern 64 (see Division G1). In this investigation, a signal is produced through amplifier 50 at terminal 52 representing the radiation falling on the detectors 29A-29F, which are made effective repetitively in sequence by feeding in signals from source 54 to give a repetitive scanning of the radiation pattern. In operating the device to emit radiation, the devices 29A-29F, now light-emitting sources, are made effective in sequence by means of source 54, but the amplifier 50 is used to vary the brightness of the emission by varying the current through the sources 29A-29F. The construction of the semi-conductor device is described in detail (see Division H1). The sequential activation of the sources 29A-29F is produced by the connection of the respective sources, through control diodes 28A-28F to two voltage gradients 46, 48, which can be varied by a sweep or sinusoidal signal from generator 54. The back-biasing on the diodes 28A-28F which normally prevents activation of the sources 29, is removed in sequence by this variation.
