    Abstract: Display apparatus comprises means for releasably connecting a display device (130;130') to the display apparatus. A data input (MON_ID) receives first data from a first releasable connection (ST) to the display device (130;130') and for receiving second data from a second releasable connection (ID) to the display device (130;130'). Switch means (320) selectively connects the data input (MON_ID) to either of the first releasable connection (ST) and the second releasable connection (ID). Display processor logic (310) is connected to the switch means (320) for generating one or more video signals to generate an image on the display device (130,130') as a function of the data directed to the data input (MON_ID) from the display device (130;130') by the switch means (320). Because the data input is switchable between connection to first data and second data from the display device, the display apparatus can identify and subsequently control both display devices which identify themselves by providing fixed reference levels on one or more lines of the output port and display devices which identify themselves by providing display identification data in a serial bit stream along a data communication channel. The same physical connector can be used to attach both kinds of display device to the video processor logic.

    Abstract: A display system comprises a display screen including a matrix of display elements and a permanent magnet having an array of channels formed therein. Each channel corresponds to a different display element. Each display element comprises a phosphor target, an electron source and means for controlling flow of electrons from the source through the corresponding channel in the magnet onto the target. Addressing means comprises first and second orthogonal conductors defining a grid. Each display element is located at the intersection of a different pair of first and second conductors. Each first conductor is connected to a first control electrode of the control means of each display element in a corresponding line of display elements and each second conductor is connected to a second control electrode of the control means of each display element in a corresponding line of display elements.

    Abstract: A digital display device interface for a host system and its display devi ce and peripherals. The interface has separate logical and physical levels, thereby making the interface independent of any hardware configuration or connector. The initialization logic level allows dynamic configuration of the system up on power up or initialization. The display data level controls the video data sent for display in a continuous, full bandwidth data stream. The I/O data level controls communications between peripheral devices connected to the display device an d the system.

    Abstract: Display apparatus comprises a display screen (400) and a drive circuit (401) connected to the display screen (400) to generate an image on the display screen (400) in response to an input video signal (R,G,B). A timer (405) generates a count in response to a clock signal. A detector (403,404,402) also receives the input video signal and resets the timer (405) on detection of a change in image content between successive frames of the input video signal (R,G,B). Control means (402) is connected to the timer (405) and to the drive circuit (401) for at least partially disabling the drive circuit (401) in response to the count stored in the timer (405) exceeding a predetermined threshold.
