[Also in Division H1] An encoding device comprises first electrical conductors 34, 36, 40, 42, &c., second electrical conductors 44, 46, &c., switches 32, 38, 52, &c., for selectively connecting the first and second conductors, third electrical conductors 48 for permanently connecting together selected ones of the first conductors to form output conductors H1-H3, H1 1 -H3 1 and fourth electrical conductors 50 for permanently connecting together selected ones of the second conductors to form output conductors V1-V3, V1 1 -V3 1 . Actuation of any one of the switches connects a pair of the first conductors to a pair of the second conductors thus causing a current flow in a unique combination of four of the output conductors. In a modification a matrix of sxteen by sixteen manual switches is used, actuation of any one of the switches providing signals on four of the sixteen output conductors. Instead of using manual switches, the first and second conductors may be connected by optically actuated photoconductors.

    Abstract: 1,086,298. Sensing records. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Oct. 25, 1965 [Dec. 17, 1964], No. 45058/65. Heading G4M. A record such as a workman's badge comprises a coded arrangement of low reluctance areas which are sensed by an array of permanent magnets and associated reed switches. The record is manually inserted in grooves in a channel bounded by plates 32, 34 the former carrying the permanent magnets 36 and the latter carrying the reed switches (not shown). The reed switches are normally biased to the closed position by permanent magnets 50 on a plate 48. A detent member 60 prevents insertion of a wrongly oriented record. As a record is inserted, it actuates a hammer, Fig. 4 (not shown) suspended on spring members 64, and when the record has been fully inserted it is locked in position by a pivoted lever engaging a hole in the record. A pair of contacts is closed to indicate correct insertion of the record, and a linkage system is actuated to release arm 58 whereby plate 48 pivots away from the reed switches to remove the biasing magnetic force. All the reed switches then open except those whose associated magnets 36 are not shunted by low reluctance areas in the record. The record is ejected by depressing a reset button, but this is prevented until sufficient time has elapsed for the information to be transmitted to a remote point, either by means of a timing mechanism 102 or by signals from the remote point.

    Abstract: 1298290 Retractive switches INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 21 Dec 1970 [23 Jan 1970] 60508/70 Heading H1N A switch comprises a fixed contact 27; a movable contact 24 mounted on a diaphragm 23 and an actuating member 20 located on the other side of the diaphragm to the contacts and having a projection 21 facing the diaphragm whereby on depression of the actuating member which is of elastic material the projection urges the contacts into engagement. The contacts 24, 27 are gold-plated copper laid on polyester diaphragms 23, 30; a separator sheet 25 having holes aligned with the contacts is placed between them. The actuating member is of solid neoprene and besides projections 21 has further, shorter projections 22 which limit travel and prevent damage to the contacts or diaphragm 23. Above the actuating member rests a thick block 16 of soft closed-cellular neoprene and above this, resting on a rigid aluminium frame 15 is an actuator sheet 10, 14 of polyurethane elastomer having raised portions 11 marked with indicia (Fig. 2, not shown). The sheet 10 can be readily removed and replaced by another bearing alternative indicia. The block 16 gives the switches a suitable "feel" and allows pretravel and overtravel. The stop projections 22 may be arranged in a circle or a square depending upon the shape of the raised operating portions 11; they may be discrete projections or a continuous ring surrounding the projection 21. More than one projection 21, each operating a pair of contacts, may be associated with a group of projections 22 below a single portion 11.

[Also in Division B6F] An electric contact making keyboard comprises a base 10 with an array of first electrical contacts 12, 12A spaced thereon. An apertured insulating layer 14 overlays the base, and a diaphragm 18 overlays the insulating layer. Second electrical contacts 20, 20A are spaced on the underside of the diaphragm in registration with first contacts 12, 12A, via the apertures in layer 14. An apertured guide plate 24 is provided above and spaced from the diaphragm 18. Each aperture has a plunger 22 with a wider and larger upper portion 22A and a second narrower and lower portion 22B which is in registration with the first and second contacts. At least the lower portion of plunger 22 comprises an elastomeric material. An elastomeric nomenclature sheet on the upper surface of the guide plate 24, seals the mechanism against dust and dirt. An apertured metal plate 30 holds the nomenclature sheet in position and prevents the accidental triggering of the keyboard.
