Abstract: A tape storage medium comprises at least one servo band SB along a longitudinal extension x of the tape storage medium TP for determining positional information such as lateral deviation for a position error signal. The servo band comprises a set of servo tracks ST1-6 extending along the longitudinal extension x of the tape storage medium and arranged next to each other. Each servo track of the set contains a servo pattern with magnetic transitions at a defined frequency f1-3, wherein the frequencies of magnetic transitions of servo patterns of adjacent servo tracks are different from each other. The set of servo tracks contains at least three servo tracks with magnetic transitions of different frequencies. Adjacent servo tracks may have orthogonal frequencies. Additional information such as longitudinal information may be encoded into the servo patterns. A tape head has at least one servo reader SR for reading the servo band and the width wSR of the servo reader is a least the width of a servo track wST.

Abstract: A tape head for reading and/or writing data has a set of one or more segments SG where each segment of the set is individually movable with respect to a frame of the tape head. Each segment of the set comprises at least one of a write element W and a read element R, and a further read element FR. The width FRW of the further read element as a measure transverse to a motion direction of the tape is at least a width WW of the write element. The width FRW may be twice WW. The further read head may read servo information from a data band of the tape. A tape for storing data has data bands each comprising multiple data tracks extending along the tape, two or more servo bands extending longitudinally along the tape and a servo area in the data bands. The servo area extends transversely across multiple data tracks each having a servo pattern of different frequency F0*n where n may be a prime number.

Entlang des Magnetbandkopfs ist eine Anordnung aus Datenwandlern positioniert, wobei sich die Anordnung senkrecht zu einer Bewegungsrichtung des Magnetbands erstreckt. Darüber hinaus ist an jedem Ende der Anordnung aus Datenwandlern eine Gruppe der Servo-Leseeinrichtungen positioniert und ist ein Abstand zwischen jeder der unmittelbar benachbarten Servo-Leseeinrichtungen in jeder der Gruppen von Servo-Leseeinrichtungen kleiner als ein oder gleich einem Drittel einer vorgegebenen Breite jedes der Servobänder.

Abstract: A tape storage medium comprises at least one data band comprising a set of data sub-bands DSB1-11 adjacent to each other. Each data sub-band contains a set of data tracks along a longitudinal extension x of the tape and adjacent to each other. Each data sub-band of the set comprises a pair of servo tracks ST1, ST2 for determining positional information. The set of data tracks of each data sub-band is arranged between the servo tracks of the pair. Every N-th data sub-band forms a reference data sub-band having servo patterns SP1, SP2, SP3 that are distinct from each other and the servo tracks of the N-1 data sub-bands arranged between reference data sub-bands have servo patterns SP4, SP5 that are distinct from the servo patterns in the reference data sub-bands. Writing data to the tape includes writing a first data sub-band and a pair of servo tracks adjacent to a preformatted servo band and writing further data sub-bands and pairs of servo tracks adjacent to the previously written data sub-band.

Abstract: A tape head 1 comprises a tape bearing surface 11, shaped to form an air bearing 40, a thermal tape-head distance sensor circuit adapted to sense heat dissipated at the level of the tape bearing surface by the tape and thereby sense a distance d between the tape bearing surface and the tape. A tape-head distance control means 22 controls the bearing surface to tape distance according to a signal received from the tape-head distance sensor circuit. Closed loop feedback control can be used and the tape bearing surface may have non-skiving edges. The tape head to tape distance may be controlled with electrostatic attractors 24. The tape head may include a heater element 16 and heating circuit 13 to provide constant power to the heating circuit. The heating element may also be a resistance temperature detector which is thermally insulated from the tape bearing surface surrounding it by an air gap.

The second servo sub band contains a set of servo tracks ST1-6 arranged next to each other and extending along the tape, wherein each servo track of the set contains a servo pattern of magnetic transitions representing a waveform, where the waveforms of adjacent servo tracks are orthogonal to each other. The servo tracks may have three frequencies f1-f3 that are different from each other.

Abstract: A tape head system comprises a read and/or write head 102 having at least one read and/or write element 104 for reading from and/or writing to magnetic tape 112 and at least one electrostatic element 106, 108 arranged adjacent to the read and/or write element. A controller 122 applies a potential 118, 120 to the at least one electrostatic element. A voltage applied to the electrostatic element may be dynamically controlled to maintain a spacing d1, d2, d3, d4. The voltage may be applied so that the magnetic tape contacts the head along a first section 130 and is spaced apart from the head along a second section 138 by an air bearing 132. The head system may include a tensioning unit 128. The electrostatic elements may be formed metal islands integrated into the head surface.

Abstract: Tracking control in a data storage device 1 is adapted to counter effects of vibration. The storage device has a device body 2 and a read/write head 6 for reading and writing data in a data track of a storage medium 5. An actuator system 7 has a plurality of degrees of freedom and is mounted on the device body for moving the read/write head relative to the data track. A body vibration sensor, such as an accelerometer 8, is provided on the device body for generating a signal indicative of vibration of the body and an actuator vibration sensor 9 is provided on the actuator system for generating a signal indicative of vibration of the actuator system. A controller processes the signals from the body and actuator vibration sensors to derive at least one coupling signal indicative of vibration coupling between the degrees of freedom, and controls the actuator system in dependence on the coupling signal and the signal from the body vibration sensor. The controller may use feedforward and the data storage device may be a tape drive.
