    Abstract: A tape storage medium comprises at least one servo band (SB) along a longitudinal extension (x) of the tape storage medium (TP) for supporting to determine positional information. The servo band (SB) comprises a first servo subband (SB1) extending along the longitudinal extension (x) of the tape storage medium (1) and a second servo subband (SB2) extending along the longitudinal extension (x) of the tape storage medium (TP) next to the first servo subband (SB1). The first servo subband (SB1) comprises a frame servo pattern containing a set of servo frames (FR), wherein each servo frame (FR) of the set comprises a first burst (A) comprising at least two servo stripes (SP1) inclined at a first angle ( α) with respect to a direction orthogonal to the longitudinal extension (x) of the tape medium (TP), followed by a second burst (B) comprising at least two servo stripes (SP2) inclined at a second angle (&bgr;) with respect to the direction orthogonal to the longitudinal extension (x) of the tape medium (TP), which second angle (α) is different from the first angle (&bgr;). The second servo subband (SB2) contains a set of servo tracks (STx) extending along the longitudinal extension (x) of the tape storage medium (TP) and arranged next to each other, wherein each servo track (STx) of the set contains a servo pattern of magnetic transitions representing a waveform when being read, and wherein the waveforms of adjacent servo tracks (STx) are orthogonal to each other.

    Abstract: Timing based servo bursts of servo frames, in which the frames are arranged to be symmetric with the same number of servo stripes in each burst of a frame, are synchronized by shifting selected bits.     Abstract: A tape storage system simultaneously receives readback signals from a set of data readers DRi reading from data tracks DT1-14 of a set of adjacent data tracks extending along a longitudinal extension x of a tape. Each data track has a width wDT and each data reader has a width wDR that exceeds the width of a data track. In the readback signal of one of the data readers a simultaneous presence of two waveforms is detected stemming from two different servo patterns SP1, SP2 arranged in servo sections of adjacent data tracks. Lateral position, velocity, gain or timing information is derived from a measure of the energy of the two waveforms detected in the readback signal of the one data reader and another of the data readers and is used in the operation of the tape storage system. The servo patterns can have at least two different servo patterns, the servo sections of adjacent data tracks being longitudinally offset and partly overlapping.

    Abstract: A write head is provided for writing a servo pattern to a magnetic tape storage medium. The write head comprises at least a first write gap A and a second write gap B, the gaps being separately energizable. The second write gap comprises at least a first section a and a second section b. Energization of the second write gap causes a magnetic flux across the first section insufficient for changing a magnetization of a track and the second section 10 is designed such that energization causes a magnetic flux across the second section sufficient for magnetizing a track of the magnetic tape storage medium TP. The gaps may be inclined or perpendicular to a motion direction of the tape.
