    Abstract: A tape storage medium comprises at least one servo band (SB) along a longitudinal extension (x) of the tape storage medium (TP) for supporting to determine positional information. The servo band (SB) comprises a first servo subband (SB1) extending along the longitudinal extension (x) of the tape storage medium (1) and a second servo subband (SB2) extending along the longitudinal extension (x) of the tape storage medium (TP) next to the first servo subband (SB1). The first servo subband (SB1) comprises a frame servo pattern containing a set of servo frames (FR), wherein each servo frame (FR) of the set comprises a first burst (A) comprising at least two servo stripes (SP1) inclined at a first angle ( α) with respect to a direction orthogonal to the longitudinal extension (x) of the tape medium (TP), followed by a second burst (B) comprising at least two servo stripes (SP2) inclined at a second angle (&bgr;) with respect to the direction orthogonal to the longitudinal extension (x) of the tape medium (TP), which second angle (α) is different from the first angle (&bgr;). The second servo subband (SB2) contains a set of servo tracks (STx) extending along the longitudinal extension (x) of the tape storage medium (TP) and arranged next to each other, wherein each servo track (STx) of the set contains a servo pattern of magnetic transitions representing a waveform when being read, and wherein the waveforms of adjacent servo tracks (STx) are orthogonal to each other.

    Abstract: A write head is provided for writing a servo pattern to a magnetic tape storage medium. The write head comprises at least a first write gap A and a second write gap B, the gaps being separately energizable. The second write gap comprises at least a first section a and a second section b. Energization of the second write gap causes a magnetic flux across the first section insufficient for changing a magnetization of a track and the second section 10 is designed such that energization causes a magnetic flux across the second section sufficient for magnetizing a track of the magnetic tape storage medium TP. The gaps may be inclined or perpendicular to a motion direction of the tape. The head may have a third write gap separately energizable to the first and second gaps where the third gap also has first and second sections. A method of writing a servo band comprises moving a servo band across at least first and second write gaps.

    Abstract: A tape storage medium comprises a servo band SB along a longitudinal extension x of the tape TP for determining positional information. The servo band comprises a set of servo tracks ST1-6 arranged next to each other. Each servo track of the set contains a pseudo noise sequence PN_A-C of symbols, where the pseudo noise sequences of servo patterns of adjacent servo tracks are different from each other. The set of servo tracks contains at least three servo tracks with different pseudo noise sequences. The waveforms of adjacent servo tracks may be orthogonal to each other in the time domain. The servo patterns may contain additional information such as longitudinal position, manufacturing information or a servo band identifier. A tape head contains a servo reader SR where the width of the reader wSR is at least a width of a servo track wST. A read back signal of the servo reader is used for adjusting a lateral position of a tape head.

    Abstract: A write head 108 comprises a yoke 110 having at least a first and a second gap 112, 114 and a coil 116 for producing a magnetic field at each gap. The coil comprises a plurality of windings 118, 120 which are arranged to produce the same magnetic field strength at each gap and/or along each gap by use of a proximity effect between the windings and a respective gap. Gaps may be arranged symmetrically about a first line 214 and the windings 209, 209, 213, 213 can be arranged in a pattern symmetrically about a second line 212 where the first and second lines are offset from each other. The distance between neighboring winding portions may vary and the windings may be non-parallel to each other. The write head can be used for writing servo patterns on magnetic tape.

    Abstract: A tape head 1 is adapted for reading and/or writing to a magnetic tape and has a tape-bearing surface comprising a transducer area 30 and a cavity 51, 52 adjacent to the transducer area. The servo band comprises a set of servo tracks ST1-6 extending along the longitudinal extension x of the tape storage medium and arranged next to each other. Each servo track of the set contains a servo pattern with magnetic transitions at a defined frequency f1-3, wherein the frequencies of magnetic transitions of servo patterns of adjacent servo tracks are different from each other. The set of servo tracks contains at least three servo tracks with magnetic transitions of different frequencies. Adjacent servo tracks may have orthogonal frequencies. Additional information such as longitudinal information may be encoded into the servo patterns. A tape head has at least one servo reader SR for reading the servo band and the width wSR of the servo reader is a least the width of a servo track wST.
