Abstract: A dual element (80a,80b) magnetoresistive (MR) head (80) is positioned relative to a storage medium (24) in a storage device (20). The MR head (80) has first and second MR elements (80a,80b). The storage medium (24) is mounted in the storage device (20) to allow relative movement between the MR head (80) and the storage medium (24). The storage medium (24) includes servo information (106,108) provided to induce first and second thermal responses (211,213) in the MR elements (80a,80b). A controller (250) is coupled to the MR head (80) and controls the relative movement between the MR head (80) and the storage medium (24) using the first and second thermal responses (211,213) in the MR elements (80a,80b).

Abstract: The fly height of read/write heads in multiple disk drives is dynamically adjusted to optimum fly height by a servo loop. The fly height is sensed in real time with a harmonic ratio fly height detector and compared to an optimum or reference fly height. The suspension system of each head is adjusted in accordance with the departure of the fly height of that head from the optimum fly height. The adjustment of the suspension system is accomplished by bonding a piezoelectric film to the flexible suspension arm carrying each head. The fly height is corrected for both radial and circumferential error as the head changes radial and circumferential position relative to the disk surface. The reference fly height, to which each head is moved by the servo loop, may be selectively changed in the fly height servo operation. This can be done to lift the heads away from the disk surface during track seek mode or disk drive sleep mode. The reference fly height can also be changed to lower the heads towards the disk surface during error recovery mode.

Abstract: A disk drive stores multimedia data in long spiral data tracks. The tracks on opposite surfaces of the disk spiral in opposite directions, so that a track on one surface can be read as the actuator sweeps in, and a track on the opposite surfa ce can be read as the actuator sweeps out. Because the actuator only follows spiral tracks without performing long seek operations, the actuator motor can be reduce d in size and stresses on actuator bearings and other parts are reduced. Additiona lly, due to reduced disturbances associated with seeks, it is possible to follow trac ks more closely and therefore reduce the width of individual tracks. Further cost reductions are accomplished by spinning the disks at a slower speed and reducing the size of the spin motor accordingly. Finally, data density can be increased s imply because multimedia data does not require the same low error rate as conventional data. Preferably, a group of disk drives optimized for multimedia data is used t o form a video-on-demand system. Compressed, interleaved portions of a video presentation, such as a motion picture, are stored in blocks on the spiral track s. The drives read the blocks on one spiral track at a time from beginning to end, placing the data from these blocks in a set of buffers corresponding to differen t short time intervals. Video signals are output from the buffers. Any short time interval of the presentation can be accessed on demand by switching to the appropriate buffer.

Abstract: A method and system includes digitally linearizing a digital output signal originating from a magnetoresistive sensor by detecting the digital output signal originating from the magnetoresistive sensor. A linearization factor is then correlated to the digital output signal. Then, the digital output signal is modified the linearization factor to linearize the digital output signal.

Abstract: Disclosed is a disk drive having at least one disk for storing data. The disk drive includes at least one transducer for reading or writing data to or from the disk. The transducer is attached to an actuator which positions the transducer with respect to the disk. The actuator includes a controllable motor which is used to move the actuator and the transducer attached thereto. The disk drive also includes a ramp for off loading the transducer or for parking the transducer off of the surface of the disk. Also disclosed is apparatus and methods for measuring and controlling the movement of the actuator and attached transducer while the transducer is coming from a position off of the ramp and onto the surface of the disk.

Abstract: In a storage device, such as a magnetic rigid disk drive, data is stored at varying linear densities in the user data storage portions to increase the effective storage capacity of the device as a function of the differences in soft error rate tolerance associated with the various types of data being stored and the ability of non-alphanumeric data to be enhanced by reconstruction or smoothing rather than by an error correction code. A data type signal included with incoming data dictates the recording frequency and a control signal associated with the recorded data block is read when data is addressed to appropriately adjust the clock frequency for reading such addressed stored data.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for identifying and filtering a resonance frequency of a support structure 25 supporting a read/write head 27 in proximity with a data storage medium 24 involves obtaining a particular sample of a position error signal (PES) frequency transform, preferably using Goertzel's algorithm. The velocity of the data storage medium is varied, and the magnitude of a particular PES frequency transform sample is computed at each of the velocities. A resonance frequency of the support structure is calculated using the velocity associated with the particular sample having a maximum magnitude. The effects of one or more resonance frequencies associated with a read/write head suspension may be cancelled in a position error signal using one or more programmable filters provided in each servo loop. A processor programs the filters using the calculated resonance frequencies and adjusts to compensate for the additional lag introduced into the respective servo loops by the selected programmable filters. A method and apparatus for identifying one or more resonance frequencies of one or more read/write head support structures according to the principles of the present invention may be implemented in a data storage system and, preferably, implemented in-situ a data storage system without resort to circuitry external to the data storage system.
