Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device improved for storing multi-media data. SOLUTION: The multi-media data are stored in a long spiral data track by a disk drive. The track on the reverse surface of the disk is formed to the spiral state in the opposite direction, consequently, the track on one surface is read out when an actuator is swept in, and the track on the reverse face is read out when the actuator is swept out. The compression interleaving part of the video expression such as a movie is stored in blocks on the spiral track. The blocks on the spiral track are read out by the drive at one time from the beginning to the end, and the data from these blocks are arranged to a set of buffers corresponding to the different short time intervals. A video signal is outputted from these buffers. By means of switching to the buffer having the appropriate expression of the optional short time interval, the access is carried out in accordance with the request.

Abstract: In a magnetic data storage device having data recorded in tracks on a media surface and including at least one magnetoresistive (MR) transducer read heads, the adaptive control method for the read head bias current involves determining an optimised bias current value for each MR head. The optimised values are stored, and the active MR head is supplied with a bias current in accordance with the stored value. The optimised bias current value is periodically re-determined for each MR head, and the stored bias current values are revised to correspond with the new optimised bias current values. The bias current values are stored on a disk media surface and are transferred from disk storage to random access memory during the power up sequence of the device.

Abstract: Storing data on a data processing system is done upon generation of a data file by displaying a user interface allowing user selection of storage criteria for the data file. Responsive to user selection of storage criteria for a file determining a physical format type for the file from a plurality of available physical format types. Then the file is stored on a direct access storage device as at least a first record conforming with the determined physical format type.

Abstract: The leading (47) and trailing (48) edges are relative to the motion of the medium. The longitudinal axis is disposed along the length of the support structure and is at a skew angle ranging from zero to positive and negative valves, wrt the direction of motion. A pair of side rails is disposed along the side edges facing the recording medium. The side rails are non-identical and non-symmetrical about the axis for providing air pressurisation about the axis for providing air pressurisation when the skew angle varies over its range. The slider thus flies at a close, uniform spacing from the moving recording medium.

Abstract: RO9-91-037 METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR REDUCING TRACK SWITCH LATENCY IN A DISK DRIVE In a ultra high density, multiple-disk drive, track switches within a cylinder of tracks as well as track switches to tracks on other cylinders both require a movement of the head stack actuator. Track switching latency in such a disk drive is reduced by overlapping pre-movement portions of the track switching process with the data transfer operation of the currently active recording head. In addition, post-movement portions of the track switching process are overlapped with the movement of the heads so that the next selected read/write head may begin a data transfer operation immediately upon arrival at the next track. Further, the pre-movement and post-movement portions of the track-switch process may be overlapped with low displacement movement of the read/write heads relative to the currently active track or the next track.

Abstract: DISK DRIVE OPTIMIZED CHANNEL CIRCUIT A magnetic disk drive channel circuitry is shown and described that generates eight incremental values of write current and eight incremental values of delta-V (the minimum voltage change per unit time which tests signals to discriminate between data and noise). Each of these variable parameter values may be program selected by a three bit bus signal. This variability testing of and adaptation to the optimum parameter value for each head media combination and by grouping tracks in contiguous data bands, the parameters may be optimized for tracks near the inner diameter, the outer diameter and in the middle band. The variable delta-V can also be used as an additional data recovery tool wherein re-reading with a lower value enhances recovery of missing bit errors and re-reading with an increased value can assist recovery from an extra bit error.
