Abstract: A multimedia search and indexing system automatically selects scenes or even ts of interest from any media, i.e., video, film, sound for replay, in whole or in part, in other contexts. The entire audio track of a recorded event in video, film, sound, etc., is analyzed to determine audio levels within a set of frequency ranges of interest. Audio clip levels within the selected frequency ranges are chosen as audio cues representative of events of interest in the track. The selection criteria are applied to the audio track of the recorded event. An Edit Decision List (EDL ) is generated from the analysis of the audio track. The list is representative of scenes or sounds of interest as clips for reuse. The clips are reviewed and accepted or rejected for reuse. Once selected, the clips are edited using industry standard audio and video editing techniques.

Abstract: A method and system for increasing ease-of-use and bandwidth utilization in a wireless device capable of accessing a communication network is disclosed. The presen t invention uses the wireless device to send information about the environment to a server on the communication network. In response, the wireless device receives identifiers from the serv er of the web sites most likely to be requested by a user of the wireless device in that environment. In a further aspect of the present invention, the wireless device may also pre-fetch contents from the identified web sites in times when bandwidth is not in use to further speed responsiveness of the device.

Abstract: A method for providing privately viewable data in a publicly viewable display comprises the steps of: generating a sequencing pattern; generating a data signal having interspersed frames of private data among frames of masking data according to the sequencing pattern; providing the data signal to the publicly viewable display; and, opening and closing shutters in a set of active glasses in accordance with the sequencing pattern. In one embodiment, the sequencing pattern can correspond to alternating displays of the private data and the masking data. In an alternative embodiment, the sequencing pattern can correspond to combined left eye/right eye images of the private data. In the preferred embodiment, the masking data can be a fill pattern, for example, random data or a screen saver image. However, in another embodiment, the masking data can be a derivation of the private data. The step of opening and closing the shutters can comprise the step of responsive to sync pulses in the sequencing pattern, opening and closing the shutters. In consequence of the preferred method, a user viewing the display with the active glasses can view the private data and unauthorized viewers without the active glasses can view only the private data obscured by the masking data. The private data may be characters which are made up of subsets of dots 54 transmitted over a plurality of frames 56, 58, 60 whereby the persistence of vision of the viewer integrates the dots to form whole characters.

Abstract: A system and method of conducting commercial activities such as an auction in a rather localized area (such as a shopping mall). Potential consumers located in the local area have a mobile wireless communications device (for example, a smart cellular phone or a 2-way radio or a Bluetooth communication device) including a set of stored instructions allowing the device to be programmed with a set of desired transactions and preferences such as the brands or transaction types which the consumer prefers. Merchants are connected to receive a communication from the communications device and respond to the desired transaction and preferences by proposing goods or services at specific terms such as price. The mobile wireless communications device associated with the potential consumer has the potential to receive communications from merchants (either directly or through an intermediate system) and to transmit a communication back to the merchant indicating the potential offer so that a merchant can revise or improve the offer. In this way, local merchants can be aware of the offers that a consumer receives and can improve on those offers to secure the potential consumer's business. While the actual transaction may be conducted in person at the merchant, one can envision a system where the transaction is completed through the wireless communication system with the payment occurring through charge or other electronic transaction and the delivery of the goods or service through conventional delivery channels.

Abstract: A user through a personal computer, in real time, controls the activation and selection of voice and data transmission paths in a communication network independent of network profiles. The network includes a public switched telephone network and a data network, e.g. the Internet for voice and/or data transmissions over either the voice or data networks. In the network, a voice terminal and a computer terminal are coupled to a shared voice and data terminal. A digital subscriber line access multiplexer is coupled to the shared voice and data terminal; the data network through a client server interface, and a voice network through an intelligent switch. The client server interface includes programmable stored data descriptive of network-authorized data and voice functions and transmission paths in the voice and data networks. The interface is linked to the multiplexer and switch for transmitting signaling messages directing traffic to the voice and data networks in accordance with the stored data. The computer terminal displays menus obtained from the client server which enable the user, in real time, to activate and select voice and/or data transmission paths through either the voice and/or data networks independent of pre-defined network profiles and/or traditional traffic assumptions.

Abstract: A method for securely providing privately viewable data in a publicly viewable display can include interspersing private data frames among public data frames according to a sequencing pattern. A syncstream can be encoded based upon a syncstream mask. More particularly, the syncstream can specify when to activate shutters in a set of active glasses in synchronization with the sequencing pattern. Notably, an encryption key pair can be generated having a public key and a private key. Using the public key, the syncstream mask can be encrypted and forwarded to a pair of active glasses. Once received in the active glasses, the encrypted syncstream mask can be decrypted with the private key. Finally, the decrypted syncstream mask can be applied to the encoded syncstream to determine when to activate the shutters in the active glasses.

Abstract: Multimedia segments (e.g. audio or video tracks, still images etc.), along with a playlist (e.g. fig. 3 ), are transmitted by a provider and received by a processing system interfaced with a viewer's audiovisual display. The playlist comprises a series of instructions to combine the various multimedia segments in a predetermined manner. The segments, when combined in the display according to the playlist, comprise a multimedia presentation. Some of the multimedia segments to be combined may be provided to the processing system via other means, such as the internet.
