SOLUTION: The carbon black content concn. of the magnetic layer 4 having a thickness of 0.1 to 2.5 μm is specified to 0.0014 to 0.07 g/cm , more preferably 0.002 to 0.05 g/cm . As against this, the content concn. of the carbon black of the intermediate layer 3 having a thickness of 0.02 to 0.5 μm is specified to 0.02 to 0.7 g/cm , further preferably 0.04 to 0.6 g/cm , by which the carbon black content concn. ratio is made higher by 2.0 to 50, more preferably 4 to 25 than the carbon black concn. of the magnetic layer 4 to attain the content of the high concn. The average grain size of at least one kind of the primary particles of the carbon black is specified to 0.01 to 0.08 μm more preferably 0.013 to 0.06 μm. As a result, the tight adhesion property of the magnetic layer 4 and the intermediate layer 3 is improved, by which the durability is improved with respect to the pressure at the time of recording and reproducing and the result improved in the electromagnetic conversion characteristics as well is obtd.

As the binder, the polyulethane based resin A having optimum coating film hardness, running durability holding, number mean molecule for giving high filling property of magnetic powder of 10000 to 20000 and the polyulethane based resin B having running durability effect holding, number mean molecules of 21000 to 50000 to improve dispersion property of magnetic powder are used.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the dispersibility of a ferromagnetic metal powder and to obtain a coating film having a smooth surface after coating without defects by using a magnetic coating material with addition of a phosphate which is adjusted by high shearing treatment to form a magnetic layer. SOLUTION: The magnetic layer 3 formed on a nonmagnetic base body 2 of the magnetic recording medium 1 contains a ferromagnetic metal powder, a phosphate and a binder having polar groups. The magnetic layer 3 is formed by applying a magnetic coating material containing a ferromagnetic metal powder, a phosphate, a binder and a solvent. Further, by using a magnetic coating material prepated by adding the phosphate in a specified period of the production process, the dispersibility of the powder can be improved even when a ferromagnetic metal powder is used.
