    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply measure tape characteristics in a short time while observing the change with time of a measuring sample by holding plural tapes arranged continuously on a holding body. SOLUTION: One-end parts of a reference magnetic tape Mr and a magnetic tape Mx to be measured are retained to tape clippers 5a and 5b respectively, while the other end parts to tape clippers 6a and 6b, so as to make the individual tape have a prescribed tension respectively. Thereafter, a rotary drum 1 is rotated, and the measurement is performed by bringing a magnetic head close to the tapes. The tapes Mr and Mx are measured alternately sand repeatedly in accordance with the rotation of the drum 1. Consequently, the simple and speedy measurement can be carried out without necessity of repeating measurement and exchange as in the conventional manner. Then, because of the alternate measurement, even when the head is damaged or clogged, this is detected by comparing measuring results of the tape Mx before and after this measurement with the tape Mr, and hence the accurate measuring result can be obtained.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the durability and corrosion resistance of a magnetic recording medium having an iron-carbon-oxygen-based magnetic layer by partially overlapping the last part of a process to form a magnetic layer and the initial part of a process to form a protective layer. SOLUTION: A gas as the carbon source such as methane is supplied to an ECR plasma CVD device 6 to produce a carbon ion, which is supplied to a sputtering region to form a Fe-C-O-based magnetic layer on a film. In this process, a gas as a carbon source is supplied from an ECR plasma CVD device 8 as a second carbon ion supply source to produce a carbon ion. A part of the carbon ion is supplied to overlap the last stage of vapor deposition of the magnetic layer (namely, the last part of the process to form the magnetic layer). Thereby, the obtd. magnetic recording medium has a mixed state of the magnetic layer and the protective layer.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the corrosion resistance of a back coating layer by incorporating Ni, Cr, Mo, Fe and W into the back coating layer. SOLUTION: Ni, Cr, Mo, Fe and Ware incorporated as essential components into a back coating layer formed on a side of a substrate opposite to the side with a magnetic layer. Vapor deposition using a crucible divided into five parts in vacuum is fit to form the back coating layer and surface properties can be controlled by introducing oxidizing gas at the time of vapor deposition. The weight ratio of Ni:Cr:Mo:Fe:W in the back coating layer is preferably 58:22:13:4:3 or 59:16:16:5:4. The deterioration of running stability due to the corrosion of the back coating layer is prevented and the occurrence of jitter and dropout can be prevented.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate curling of a sample by a method wherein the sample is sandwiched between divided surfaces of two mold members crossing a part of a cavity, a resin is poured into the hollow, then, taken out after solidified and the sample wrapped in a resin material alone is left so that it is used for blocking of a silicone rubber to make a sample. SOLUTION: Hollows 5 of two divided mold members 1 and 2 are put together on a division surface 4 to form a cavity 6. A sample, namely, magnetic tape 7 is sandwiched between the divided surfaces of the members crossing a part of the cavity 6. A resin material is poured into the cavity 6 from above a one-piece mold 8, the work is placed into a depression chamber and left alone at 60 deg.C for 24 hour to solidify the resin. Thereafter, the mold 8 is taken apart and the resin solidified is taken out. A magnetic tape part wrapped in the resin is left and the other magnetic tape 7 is removed. The resin having the magnetic tape wrapped therein is placed into a die of a silicone rubber and a resin material is poured thereinto to solidify. Thereafter, the resin is taken out of the die to be made as a sample for a template of high quality without curling.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form iron nitride at a high density and to efficiently produce a magnetic recording medium having an Fe-N magnetic layer by irradiating the molten part of iron with nitrogen ions. SOLUTION: A cooling can roll 1 and a crucible 2 are housed in a vacuum vessel not shown in Fig. A film 3 travels on the cooling can roll 1 below which the crucible 2 made of MgO is placed. The iron 4 of purity 99.95% is put therein and the iron 4 surface in the crucible 2 is irradiated with an electron beam from an electron beam gun 5, by which the iron 4 is heated and evaporated. Further, gaseous N2 is supplied to the ion gun 6 to form the nitrogen ions N . The molten part of the iron 4 in the crucible 2 is irradiated with the nitrogen ions formed in such a manner. The magnetic layer of the Fe-N thin film having the desired compsn. is formed on the film 3 by adjusting the irradiation quantity of the nitrogen ions N , the output of the electron beam gun 5, the traveling speed of the film 3, etc.
