Abstract: PURPOSE:To directly produce the subject compound useful as a production intermediate for polymers and pharmaceuticals in high yield at a low cost by using easily available hydroquinone as a starting raw material and reducing with hydrogen in a hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound can be produced by using hydroquinone as a starting raw material and reducing the material with hydrogen in a hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of a palladium or nickel catalyst usually in hydrogen atmosphere having normal or positive pressure at 0-200%, preferably between normal temperature and 180 deg.C. The hydrocarbon solvent is e.g. benzene, toluene or cyclohexane and the amount of hydroquinone is 0.05-1g, especially 0.1-0.5g per 1ml of the solvent. The catalyst is palladium/activated carbon, nickel/pumice, etc., and the amount of nickel, etc., supported on the carrier is preferably 0.3-10wt.% based on the carrier.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain silazanes useful as a raw material for ceramics, an intermediate for medicines, agricultural chemicals, etc., in high yield under mild reactional conditions by reacting hydrosilanes with amines using an alkali metal compound as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Hydrosilanes expressed by formula I (R -R represent H, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, amino or organosilicon group; (k) is 1-100) are reacted with an amine expressed by formula II (R and R represent H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl or organosilicon group) by using an alkali metal compound expressed by the formula MAH4 (M represents alkali metal; A represents boron or aluminum) (preferably LiBH4, LiAlH4, NaBH4, NaAlH4, KBH4 or KAlH4) to afford the objective silazanes. The amount of the catalyst to be used is preferably 0.1-1mol based on 100mol hydrosilanes.

CONSTITUTION:Naphthalene or monomethylnaphthalene or both are brought into contact with a monomolecular aromatic hydrocarbon having >=4 methyl groups, especially penta- to hexamethylbenzene in the presence of an ion exchange type-layer compound, preferably a layer compound having ionic components which are those ions partially or wholly derived from tri- or polyvalent elements, especially aluminum ion, gallium ion, zirconium ion or indium ion between the layers to selectively afford a beta,beta-dimethylnaphthalene, especially 2,6- and 2,7-dimethylnaphthalenes useful as a raw material for polyethylene naphthalene in high yield.

CONSTITUTION:A phenol of formula I (X is H, hydroxyl or amino; R is H, hydroxyl, alkyl or halogen; n is 1 or 2) is reacted with an aromatic amine of formula II (Y is H, hydroxyl, amino or alkyl; R is H, alkyl or halogen; m is 1 or 2) in the presence of an ion exchange type layered clay catalyst, e.g. synthetic mica or montmorillonite, at 50-400 deg.C, preferably 100-200 deg.C for 5min- 10hr to give the aimed substance. The synthetic mica as the catalyst is a layered compound consisting essentially of silicon dioxide, and the montmorillonite is a fluorosilicate mineral, constituting clay, and having a layered structure.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an arylalkyl hydroperoxide selectively, in high conversion and in high concentration by oxidizing an arylalkylhydrocarbon with an oxygen- containing gas in the presence of a transition metal complex having a specific compound as a ligand as a catalyst. SOLUTION: This production of an arylalkyl hydroperoxide is to oxidize (A) an arylalkylhydrocarbon of formula II [P and Q are each H, an alkyl, etc.; (x) is 1-3 integer; Ar is an aromatic hydrocarbon having (x) valency] with (B) an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a transition metal complex catalyst of formula I [A is independently a 1-6C alkylene, o-phenylene, 1,8- naphthylene, etc.; K to K are independently H, an alkyl, an aryl, pyridyl, etc.; M is a transition metal ion having +(a) valency as the central metal ion; X is a counter ion having -(b) valency and stable against oxidation; (a) is 1-4 integer; (b) is a positive integer; (n) is 1-4 integer, (n)=(a)/(b); (m) is an integer not less than 2] and convert reaction product into the corresponding arylalkyl hydroperoxide.

CONSTITUTION: This hydroperoxide is obtained by reaction of 100 pts.wt. of a compound of the formula (P and Q are each H or an alkyl; n is 1-3; Ar is a n-valent aromatic hydrocarbon) with an oxygen-contg. gas (e.g. air) under atomospheric pressure at 50-130 deg.C using 0.00001-5wt.% of a catalyst, i.e. manganese dioxide or permanganate. By the above method, the objective compound can be obtained at high conversion rate without formation of byproducts such as formic acid and acetic acid while suppressing the decomposition of the compound formed.

CONSTITUTION: This hydroperoxide is obtained by reaction of a compound of the formula (P and Q are each H or an alkyl; n is 1-3; Ar is a n-valent aromatic hydrocarbon) with an oxygen-contg. gas (e.g. air) under normal pressures at 40-120 deg.C in the presence of a catalyst, a ruthenium oxide or a ruthenium compound having Ru-O-Ru structure. The ruthenium oxide or ruthenium compound as the catalyst are e.g. ruthenium dioxide or μ-oxo-diacetato-bis(tripyridylruthenium), respectively. The amount of the catalyst to be used is 0.00001-10 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. of the compound of the formula.

The catalyst may be used as it is or in the form of an aqueous solution.
