Abstract: PURPOSE:To profitably prepare the subject compound in high yield in a largely improved activity-sustaining state and further in a repeatedly usable state by reacting aniline or a derivative thereof with a polyhydric alcohol in the presence of a specific silver catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Aniline or a derivative thereof is subjected to a reaction with a polyhydric alcohol preferably in a molar ratio of 1:(0.05-5), especially 1:(0.1-2), in the presence of a catalyst at 200-600 deg.C, especially at 250-500 deg.C, to provide the objective compound. The catalyst comprising at least one kind of Co, Fe and Ni elements contained in a silver catalyst carried on a carrier having a specific surface area of >=rhom /g. The carrier preferably contains SiO2-ZnO, SiO2-CdO, etc., or active carbon. The amount of the silver carried on the carrier is 1-50wt.%, and the content of the Co, etc., is an atomic ratio of 0.01-0.20 based on the carried silver.
