    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain benzonitriles in high purity and yield in one step, by the vapor-phase catalytic reaction of benzoic acids with ammonia in the presence of a solid catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound can be produced by reacting benzoic acids with ammonia in an inert gas atmosphere (e.g. nitrogen, helium and argon) in the presence of a solid catalyst, especially a dehydration catalyst under normal or positive pressure at 200-500 deg.C, preferably 250-450 deg.C. More than equimolar amount of ammonia is used based on the benzoic acids. The catalyst is e.g. silica-alumina preferably supporting phosphoric acid, boric acid, etc. The ammonia is preferably an aqueous solution of ammonia having a concentration of 0.1-30%.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a perfume, etc., from an inexpensive raw material in good selectivity in one stage, by reacting hydrogen with nitrobenzene and ethylene glycol in the vapor phase in the presence of a group VIII metal and/or active carbon-containing catalyst. CONSTITUTION:For example, hydrogen is reacted with nitrogenzene and ethylene glycol in the vapor phase in the presence of a group VIII metal of the periodic table of elements and/or active carbon-containing catalyst of Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, Pt or active carbon in the form of powder, grain, lump, flake, molded article, etc., or prepared by supporting, as necessary, the above- mentioned material together with another compound on a carrier at 200-500 deg.C, preferably 250-400 deg.C to advantageously afford the aimed indole or a derivative thereof useful also as a synthetic raw material for amino acids in high purity.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high yield, by catalytically reacting isobutylene and/or tert-butanol, nitric acid and an alcohol in the vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Isobutylene and/or tert-butanol, nitric acid and an alcohol are reacted in the vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. cobalt oxide, to give a methacrylic acid ester. The reaction temperature is within 150-500 deg.C, preferably 200-450 deg.C range. The nitric acid to be used is fuming nitric acid or aqueous solution of nitric acid, i.e. dinitrogen pentoxide. The alcohol to be used is a 1-4C alcohol except tert-butanol and >=1mol, based on 1mol isobutylene or tert-butanol, alcohol is preferably used. The aimed compound is obtained from the inexpensive raw material in one stage and NO2 and water formed as by-products can be reused as the nitric acid.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce the title fine powder of high-purity amorphous boron nitride at low cost by mixing ammonium borate, urea and melamine or guanidine and allowing the mixture to react under specified conditions. CONSTITUTION:Urea and melamine or guanidine is mols >=5times the theoretical amt. are mixed into ammonium borates such as (NH4)2B4O7, NH4B5O8, (NH4)2B8O13, etc., and the mixture is heated to 650-1,100 deg.C under ordinary pressure or under elevated pressure in an inert gas such as N2, Ar and He and allowed to react. The reaction product is washed with water and then with a low b.p. org. solvent such as methanol. The product is then dried under ordinary pressure or under reduced pressure to produce the fine powder of high-purity amorphous boron nitride in good yield.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain in high selectivity in high yield high-purity acetic acid by one stage industrially advantageously, by using nitric acid as an oxidizing agent, subjecting ethylene as a raw material to a gaseous-phase catalytic reaction in the presence of a catalyst to oxidize ethylene directly. CONSTITUTION:1mol ethylene shown by the formula I and >=4mol nitric acid shown by the formula II are subjected to a gaseous-phase catalytic reaction preferably in the coexistence of water in the presence of a catalyst such as especially improved V2O5/SiO2 or MoO3, etc. supported on a carrier such as SiO2, etc., in an oxidizing active gas atmosphere at normal pressure or under pressure at 150-500 deg.C to give acetic acid shown by the formula III. Nitric acid used is fuming nitric acid, 100% nitric acid, aqueous solution of nitric acid or nitric anhydride, preferably the aqueous solution, and its concentration is preferably 0.1-60%. EFFECT:An ethylene raw material is inexpensive, produces a small amount of by-products, NO2 and water formed as by-products are reacted with an oxygen- containing gas to give nitric acid, which is reused.
