Abstract: A hybrid constellation satellite communication system 100 is established using two satellite types 110, 120 in different constellations. Control services and other time delay non-sensitive services are provided using communication channels using the first type of satellites 110. Time delay sensitive services are provided using communication channels established using the second type of satellites 120. There are no inter-satellite links between the satellites of different constellations. The constellations may be formed of low earth, medium earth or geosynchronous orbit satellites.

Abstract: A hybrid constellation satellite communication system (100) is established using two or more satellite types (110, 120) in different constellations. The first type of satellites (110) are interconnected using upper inter-satellite links (115). The second type of satellites (120) are interconnected using lower inter-satellite links (125). Control services and other time delay non-sensitive services are provided using communication channels established using the first type of satellites (110). Time delay sensitive services are provided using communication channels established using the second type of satellites (120). There are no inter-satellite links between satellites in the two different constellations.

Abstract: In a packet data communication system a subscriber unit sends a request for use of a channel indicating the number of data packets to be transmitted. A system controller allocates time slots of a channel for at least some of the data packets. After transmission the subscriber unit repeats the request indicating the number of any remaining data packets, until all data packets have been transmitted. In a satellite telecommunication system the subscriber unit 30,32 assembles the data packets, determines the number it wants to transmit and sends the request message to a satellite 20. The satellite responds with either a request denied message or a request allowed message indicating the available time slots.

Abstract: A satellite communication system (116) provides users with global cellular coverage. To facilitate delivery of calls to users having subscriber units (300), a fixed channel is defined wherein subscriber units (300) are notified of incoming calls. Subscriber units (300) monitor this ring alert channel (48) and examine subscriber unit IDs (90) transmitted in a ring alert message (82) contained therein. When a subscriber unit (300) determines from the subscriber unit ID (90) that a call is being directed to it, it calls into a network to receive a call. Subscriber units (300) also monitor this fixed channel to receive a control channel directory identifying the location of a subscriber unit's broadcast (control) channels.

Abstract: Handoff methods perform cell-to-cell handoff between cells of the same satellite and between cells of different satellites. Handoff is initiated by an individual subscriber unit (ISU) based on local conditions. Once handoff is needed, the ISU chooses a candidate cell to transfer its communication based on a dynamic handoff candidate list provided by the satellite. After selecting a candidate cell, the ISU requests handoff, the satellite or satellites perform the handoff and communication begins over a new channel in the candidate cell.
