Subscriber unit (2) transmits a global positioning data service request via link (8) and receives the requested global positioning data service data via link (9).

Abstract: A complex multiplier 51, for use in a radio receiver 20,30,50,60 for receiving a carrier signal modulated by a wanted signal, the modulated carrier signal occupying one of a plurality of channels whose central frequencies are separated from one another by a fixed frequency referred to as the channel spacing, the apparatus including a local oscillator 28 for generating first and second signals at a frequency which is not an integral multiple of half the channel spacing whereby when the received carrier signal is mixed with the first and second signals, a complex, digital Very Low Intermediate Frequency (VLIF) signal is generated in which the wanted signal is centred about a VLIF which is slightly larger than half the channel spacing. The complex multiplier phase and gain adjustment means for balancing the phase and gain of the I and Q components of the VLIF signal prior to or during its down-conversion to base-band.

Abstract: A time-framed communications transceiver maintains synchronization through fade conditions by resetting a counter (640) whenever new synchronization parameters are stored in a memory (630) based on bursts detected by a receiver (610) and a burst synchronizer (620). A transmitter (690) transmits bursts based upon the synchronization parameters in the memory (630) when the time counter (640) has not exceeded a predetermined period of time. The receiver (610) re-establishes the synchronization parameters in the memory (630) when the time counter exceeds another, longer predetermined period of time before transmission by the transmitter (690).

Abstract: A satellite communication system (116) provides users with global cellular coverage. To facilitate delivery of calls to users having subscriber units (300), a fixed channel is defined wherein subscriber units (300) are notified of incoming calls. Subscriber units (300) monitor this ring alert channel (48) and examine subscriber unit IDs (90) transmitted in a ring alert message (82) contained therein. When a subscriber unit (300) determines from the subscriber unit ID (90) that a call is being directed to it, it calls into a network to receive a call. Subscriber units (300) also monitor this fixed channel to receive a control channel directory identifying the location of a subscriber unit's broadcast (control) channels.

Abstract: A satellite-based, world-wide cellular messaging system (5) transmits paging messages to pagers via multiple beams (30). A message unit (2) monitors a multi-frequency, TDMA paging transmission and, in response to the number of transmission frequencies in use during a given time, switches to a predetermined one of the frequencies, dependent upon the contents of a reprogrammable table stored in the message unit. Information within the paging transmission specifies what frequencies will be used and when a paging transmission will be directed at a particular pager's cell.
