Abstract: A system and method is taught for controlling the power level of transmissions within a communication system having a base station, a mobile station, a communication channel, and a pilot channel. The mobile station determines a signal strength value according to a communication signal received by way of the communication channel. A pilot channel signal is determined according to a pilot signal transmitted by way of the pilot channel. The signal to noise ratio of the communication signal is determined according to the determined signal strength value and the pilot channel signal. The power level of a transmission is controlled according to the signal to noise ratio. The noise level in a communication channel within the communication system is estimated. The pilot channel signal includes pilot energy and pilot noise components. The pilot energy component is removed to provide a remaining pilot signal. Communication system operations are controlled according to the remaining pilot signal. The power levels of transmissions are controlled by determining the signal to noise ratio of a signal within the communication channel and determining a difference signal. The difference signal is formed by determining the difference between determined and desired signal to noise ratios. The difference signal is transmitted between the base station and the mobile station. The pilot channel has at least one frame and the power control signal is inserted into the frame. Thus, information representing the strength of the communication signal is transmitted to the base by way of the pilot channel within the frame. The pilot channel can have two information frames for transmitting the power control signal a plurality of times.

Abstract: A mobile user terminal (402) accesses a packet data network (450) through one or more of several network access points (404-412). One or more control points 432-440 determines which network access point or points the user terminal is to access. Control may be retained in the current control point, or transferred to another control point, whenever it is convenient. There are preferably several routers, each having an associated home agent (418-420) which determines which foreign agents need to be accessed on behalf of each user terminal. There are several foreign agents (422-430), which forward packets received from a user terminal's home agent to the control point currently controlling communications with the user terminal.

Abstract: The present invention is a novel method and apparatus for providing transparent mobility of an entity within a network. The present invention allows a given entity, which has a communication path set up between it and a peer entity, to move from one location to another, without informing the peer entity of this movement, and without having the communication path broken. The present invention is applicable to decentralized networks using the IP protocol, and is particularly applicable on networks wherein it is desired that the mobility mechanism neither introduces latency nor decreases the available bandwidth of the network. In the present invention, neither is latency increased nor is bandwidth utilization increased, as is done in other mobility models. Additionally, the present invention utilizes standard protocols that are widely available from a plurality of equipment manufacturers on a variety of platforms. Thus, the present invention provides a very cost-effective model for network providers that need to support transparent mobility within their network.

Abstract: The layers and protocols of an air interface layering architecture are designed to be modular and can be modified and upgraded to support new features, perform complex tasks, and implement additional functionality. Prior to commencement of data communication between a first entity (e.g., an access terminal) and a second entity (e.g., a radio network), a set of layers and/or protocols is selected for negotiation. For each selected layer and protocol (i.e., each attribute), a list of attribute values considered acceptable to the first entity is determined. The selected attributes and their associated attribute values are sent from the first entity and, in response, a list of processed attributes and their associated lists of processed attribute values arc received. Each list of processed attribute values includes attribute values considered acceptable to the second entity. The layers and protocols in the first entity are then configured in accordance with the received list of processed attributes and their associated processed attribute values. Other features related to configurable layers and protocols are also provided.

The difference signal is transmitted between the base station and the mobile station. The pilot channel has at least one frame and the power control signal is inserted into the frame.
