Abstract: Techniques for dynamically selecting subframe formats in a wireless network are described. In an aspect, a base station may dynamically switch between different subframe formats to support communication for different types of user equipments (UEs). In one design, the base station may declare a set of subframes as multicast/ broadcast single frequency network (MBSFN) subframes for first/legacy UEs. The base station may send signaling conveying the set of subframes as MBSFN subframes to the legacy UEs. The base station may dynamically select the formats of the set of subframes for second/new UEs, e.g., on a per subframe basis. The format of each subframe may be selected from a plurality of formats, which may include at least one regular subframe format, at least one MBSFN subframe format, and/or at least one blank subframe format. The base station may send transmissions in the set of subframes based on the selected formats.

Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate managing interaction between paging and discontinuous reception (DRX) cycles for users operating in a communication system. As described herein, a connected mode user having an associated DRX cycle can modify its schedule for paging reception to minimize unnecessary periods of activity. For example, a user can initially schedule monitoring of paging occasions that coincide with periods of activity associated with the DRX cycle of the user. If such paging occasions are not sufficient to reach a minimum required number of monitored paging occasions, additional paging occasions can be monitored as needed by scheduling additional periods of activity and/or extending periods of activity specified in the DRX cycle. Additionally or alternatively, a network can synchronize a connected mode DRX cycle associated with a user with an idle mode paging cycle for the user, thereby providing power and performance benefits with low complexity.

Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate unsolicited indication of mobile device capability change in wireless communication networks. Upon establishing communication with an access point, a mobile device can experience a change in capability, such as by attaching a device, changing a setting in a user interface, and/or the like. Rather than waiting for a reconfiguration command, when changing base stations or switching from idle to active mode, the mobile device can transmit an unsolicited message to the access point indicating the change. The access point can support the change in subsequent uplink communications or deny such support and can accordingly notify the mobile device via radio resource control (RRC) message.

Abstract: The method and apparatus as described are directed toward techniques and mechanisms to improve efficiency in wireless communication networks through optimization of handover scenarios. Determining whether an intra-base station or inter-node-B handover is too performed, and determining the protocol layers to reset during the handover based at least in part on the type of handover to be performed increases the overall efficiency of the wireless network.

Abstract: A method of performing cell reselection in a wireless communication system, comprising: camping on a first cell; identifying second and third cells deemed to be better than the first cell; moving from the first cell to the second cell without performing cell reselection to camp on the second cell; and performing cell reselection from the first cell to the second or third cell based on the updated rankings of the second and third cells as well as a corresponding apparatus.
