    Abstract: In a standard NTSC composite video signal, the peak excursion of the luminance plus chrominance signal for certain saturated colors exceeds the peak excursion of the white-representative luminance alone. When digitized, the signal is subject to quantizing noise. The effective spectial distribution of the quantizing noise is improved by reducing the amplitude of the chrominance signal so that the peak excursion of luminance plus chrominance for saturated colors does not substantially exceed the peak amplitude of white-representative luminance.

    Abstract: A transmitter unit of a remote control system includes a key function display unit for identifying the function of key elements of the transmitter unit at various steps of a control sequence for one or more controlled devices. The memory for storing character-representative information for identifying the functions of the key elements of the transmitter and corresponding function control instructions is contained in the controlled devices rather than in the transmitter unit.     Abstract: A digital TV system reduces the data rate by transmitting or recording only bytes representing half of the sampled pixels. Steering bits are also transmitted that tell which of the transmitted bytes are the closest match to the untransmitted bytes so the pixels represented by the later can be reconstructed. The steering or control bits are repeated for subsequent omitted bytes unless it no longer indicates a match within a selected tolerance or threshold.

    Abstract: The subject matter of the invention is an arrangement for masking errors in a digital video signal which, depending on the gravity of the error, selects one of different error masking methods. In detail, an adaptive estimation (horizontal or vertical averaging) of faulty pixels is selected when all pixels needed for such an estimation are free of faults. If this is not the case, a four-point averaging is used. If this is not possible, either, a vertical averaging and, finally, a horizontal averaging, is used. If the fault is very severe, a line buffer (64) supplies the last previous valid line.
