Abstract: Pentachlorophenol is prepared by the chlorination of dichlorophenols and trichlorophenols, using gaseous chlorine in the presence of an effective amount of a zirconium, hafnium, tellurium, antimony, niobium or aluminium halide or one of their precursors, until tetrachlorophenol is predominantly formed and then adding an effective amount of aluminium halide in order to obtain the pentachlorophenol. Pentachlorophenol is used as a fungicide and as a wood preservative.

Abstract: L'invention concerne un procédé de chloration sélective en position ortho par rapport à la fonction hydroxyle, de composés phénoliques de formule générale (I): (I) dans laquelle: R2 représente: un atome d'halogène; un groupement alkyle ayant 1 à 4 atomes de carbone; un groupement alkoxy ayant 1 à 4 atomes de carbone; un groupement acyloxy ayant 2 à 4 atomes de carbone; un groupement acyle ayant 2 à 4 atomes de carbone; un groupement acide carboxylique; un groupement ester -COOR5, R5 représentant un radical alkyle linéaire ou ramifié ayant de 1 à 4 atomes de carbone; un groupement nitrile; un groupement OH; un groupement -CHO; un groupement -NO2; un groupement acétamido; -R1 représente un atome d'hydrogène ou possède l'une des significations indiquées pour R2; -R3 et R4, identiques ou différents, représentent un atome d'hydrogène ou un atome ou groupement tel que ceux représentés par R2; en milieu fondu, par le chlore gazeux, caractérisé en ce que l'on opère en présence d'une quantité efficace d'au moins un cation organique.
