Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a VA system liquid crystal display device which has satisfactory contrast, operational speed and the like as in the conventional manner and also has satisfactory visual angle characteristics. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device wherein a liquid crystal 14 which is vertically aligned when no voltage is applied is interposed between a first and a second two substrates 12 and 13 is provided with a first domain regulating means provided at the first substrate and regulating the direction in which the liquid crystal is aligned when voltage is applied to the liquid crystal and a second domain regulating means provided at the second substrate and regulating the direction in which the liquid crystal is aligned when voltage is applied to the liquid crystal. The first domain regulating means is provided on at least the electrode of the first substrate and is provided with a protrusion protruding to the layer of the liquid crystal and including a dielectric.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a VA system liquid crystal display device having good viewing angle characteristics while keeping good contrast and operation speed. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device has a liquid crystal 14 having negative dielectric anisotropy held between two of first and second substrates 16, 17, and the device is equipped with a first domain regulating means formed on the first substrate 16 to regulate the alignment direction of the liquid crystal 14 when 4 voltage is applied on the liquid crystal 14, and with a second domain regulating means formed on the second substrate 17 to regulate the alignment direction of the liquid crystal when voltage is applied. The first domain regulating means has at least a protrusion 20A made of a dielectric material formed on the electrode 12 of the first substrate and protruding into the liquid crystal layer.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the liquid crystal display device of a VA (vertically aligned) type with excellent visual angle characteristics while keeping contrast and operation speed, etc., as excellent as before. SOLUTION: For this liquid crystal display device, liquid crystal whose dielectric constant anisotropy is negative is clamped between first and second substrates 12 and 13 for which a vertical alignment processing is executed to a substrate surface and the alignment of the liquid crystal becomes almost vertical when not applying a voltage, becomes almost horizontal in applying a prescribed voltage and becomes oblique applying the voltage smaller than a prescribed voltage. In this case, a first domain control means for controlling the alignment direction of the liquid crystal in applying the voltage smaller than the prescribed voltage is provided on the first substrate 12. Then, the first domain control means is provided with a first structure (20A, 23) for turning a part of the contact surface with the liquid crystal of the first substrate 12 to a slope provided on the first substrate 12, it is aligned almost vertically to the slope when not applying the voltage and the alignment direction of the surrounding liquid crystal is decided by the alignment direction around the slope when the voltage is applied.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a VA type liquid crystal display device having good contrast and operation speed same as those for a conventional device and having good viewing angle characteristics. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device has a liquid crystal 14 having negative dielectric anisotropy between first and second substrates 16, 17 and is equipped with first and second domain controlling means 20A, 20B to control the alignment direction of the liquid crystal when voltage is applied on the liquid crystal. The first and second domain controlling means are arranged in such a manner that when the device is observed in the perpendicular direction to the substrate, the first domain controlling means 20A substantially surrounds the second domain controlling means 20B in the pixel region.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a low-cost color filter substrate for a VA type liquid crystal display device which maintains the contrast and operational rate as good as those of a conventional substrate and which has good visual angle characteristics. SOLUTION: The color filter substrate has color layers 39G, 39B, 39R and holds a liquid crystal 14 with a counter substrate 17. The substrate has a first protrusion to regulate the alignment direction of the liquid crystal and a second protrusion 83 to regulate the gap between the substrate and the counter substrate 17.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To actualize the VA type liquid crystal display device with excellent visual angle characteristics while maintaining excellent contrast, an excellent operation speed, etc., as usual. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device, in which liquid crystal 14 having negative dielectric constant anisotropy is sandwiched between 1st and 2nd substrates 12 and 13 whose surfaces are aligned vertically and the liquid crystal is aligned almost vertically when no voltage is applied, almost horizontally when a specific voltage is applied and obliquely when a voltage lower than the specific voltage is applied, equipped with 1st and 2nd domain restricting means which restrict the alignment of the liquid crystal on the 1st and 2nd substrates. The 1st and 2nd domain restricting means are arrayed at a specific pitch of parallel and plural projections, hollows, or slits which bent zigzag in a specific cycle.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To actualize the VA type liquid crystal display device which has excellent visual angle characteristics while maintaining excellent contrast, an excellent operating speed, etc., as usual. SOLUTION: Liquid crystal 14 having negative dielectric constant anisotropy is sandwiched between 1st and 2nd substrates 91 and 92 whose surfaces are aligned vertically and on at least on surface of the upper and lower two substrates, a domain restricting means consisting of a protrusion, a recess, a slit formed in an electrode, or their combination is provided. Further, this device is equipped with a VA type liquid crystal panel which restricts the alignment of the liquid crystal so that the liquid crystal is aligned in plural oblique direction in each pixel, 1st and 2nd polarizing plates 11 and 15 are arranged on both the sides of the liquid crystal panel so that their axes of absorption cross each other at right angles, and at least one phase difference film 94 is arranged between the liquid crystal panel and the 1st or 2nd polarizing plate. In this case, the phase difference film has the relation nx , ny >=nz , where nx and ny are the refractive indexes in a film intra-surface direction and nz is a refractive index in the thickness direction.
